Installing the Web Filter Server

Spector 360 offers the option to use dynamic, user-based Website Filtering from the Dashboard. The Web Filter Server is a Windows service that automatically filters Client access to web sites. Clients query the Web Filter Server, and the Web Filter server applies the filtering instructions it receives from the Spector 360 Database (as set up by Website Filtering in the Dashboard).

Select Web Filter Server or Client-side Website Blocking from the Deployment Utility or Client Settings (in the Control Center). You can use Website Filtering in conjunction with Client port and Chat/IM blocking.

To install the Web Filter Server:

  1. Select where to install the service.

Install on This Computer: Install the Web Filter Server on the computer where you are running the Setup (the Administrator Station).

Install on Another Computer (enter the computer name in field below): Use this option when you need the Web Filter Server installed on a computer separate from other Server Components.  Click the Browse button to browse the network and select a computer.

Web Filter Server is Already Installed (enter computer name in field below): Use this option when you are reinstalling Spector 360 Server Components and want to use your existing Primary Server installation - see Updating or Reinstalling Spector 360.

  1. Enter or browse to a Computer Name.
If you do not choose "Install on This Computer," enter the Computer Name where the Web Filter Server (WFS) will be installed.  Use the Windows computer name; click the Browse button to locate the computer on the network.

  2. Select Install WFS Service with Network Credentials, if necessary.
See Network vs. Local Service Credentials. Check this option if you would like to use different credentials from those you are currently logged in under for the WFS.  If you are installing ALL components on one computer, you can leave this option unchecked (the service will use the Local System Account). This option is automatically checked if you chose to install the WFS service as a Network account. When this option is checked, you must enter Credentials.

If you check this option and attempt to proceed (click Next) without using the Credentials button to supply account information, a message appears. If you have already supplied credentials for a previously installed service, you can click Yes to reuse those credentials (or No to enter new credentials).

  1. Click Credentials, if necessary.
To use a Network account, click the Credentials button.  Enter the credentials that will the Web Filter Service will run under. These credentials are automatically configured for access to the Spector 360 SQL Server Database.

  1. When you are ready, click Next on the Setup Web Filter Server panel to continue. Wait as all remaining Server Components are installed.
