Installing the Databases with SQL Server Express

If you have purchased fewer than 1,000 Client licenses, the installation includes Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 with a SpectorSoft SQL Job Agent. If you have purchased 1,000 or more Client licenses, see Installing the Databases with Full SQL Server.

The location where you install the Spector 360 Databases must be accessible to all computers running the Dashboard. The Dashboard relies on connection to the database.

If you are upgrading Spector 360
You can Reinstall all components. You will be prompted for the old SA password, but will define a new SA password (following stricter rules) for the new MS SQL Server 2005 database instance. The Setup automatically moves data from the old to the new database instance and uninstalls MSDE. Make sure you have up to 3 times the size of your database in free disk space to accomplish this. See Updating Spector 360.

To install the Spector 360 Database:

  1. A message informs you that Setup will install Spector 360 Databases and MS SQL Express or full MS SQL Server after checking for the required disk space. Click Next to begin.

If the Setup determines that there is not enough free space for this installation, a message will appear. You should have ample free disk space if you have accounted for the Spector 360 Requirements and Estimating the Database Size.

  2. Select an installation paths.

Accept the default location for the SQL Server installation AND for the Spector 360 Database files (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server) or Browse to and select a different location and click OK. The MS SQL Server files and the 360 Database files can be installed at different locations, but must be in constant communication. Use Network Account credentials for the SQL Server service if components will be distributed. Click Next to proceed. If a selected installation path does not exist, respond Yes at the prompt to create it.

The Spector 360 database is given the instance name SPECTOR360. The edition of SQL Server installed depends on the number of Client licenses you have purchased.

  1. You may be prompted to download files.
If the computer you are installing on is connected to the Internet, the latest components will automatically be downloaded from SpectorSoft, and you can skip this step. If you receive the following prompt, make sure the computer is connected to the Internet, and then compare the "Current" version supplied by this Setup program to the "New" version found at the web site.

The database version you are about to install is displayed as the "Current " version on this panel. Downloading is necessary only when a newer version is available at the SpectorSoft web site.

  1. Click Next to install SQL Server.
Wait as files are downloaded, extracted, the SQL Server Database is configured and tested, and scripts are executed.

  1. Install SQL Agent Setup (SQL Server 2005 Express only).
If your installation includes SQL Server 2005 Express, the Spector 360 SQL Agent Setup Wizard now begins.  Click Next to start.

  2. Select an installation folder for the SQL Agent. The default location is C:\Program Files\Spectorsoft\Spector 360 Sql Agent\. Click Browse to navigate to and select a different location for the SQL Agent.

  1. If you wish, click Disk Cost to determine disk space on available drives. Space required by the SQL Agent appears in the "Required" column, next to "Available" disk space, followed by the "Difference" between Available and Required. From this panel, click OK to return to Select Installation Folder.

Click Next to accept the Installation Folder and continue.

  1. Click Close when the installation of the SQL Agent is complete.

  1. If you have selected Network credentials for the SQL Server, you are prompted to confirm your choice. Otherwise, the installation continues.
Click Yes to continue installing the service under network credentials.
Click No to use the Local System Account.
If you select Yes, enter the account credentials for the SQL Server service. Use the format DOMAIN\USENAME.

  1. Wait as the Microsoft SQL Server services are installed and database scripts are executed to complete the configuration.

  2. If you have Windows XP:
A message tells you that Ports 1055 and 1434 will be opened in your Windows XP Firewall to allow access to the Spector 360 Database. Click OK.

  3. When Spector 360 Database setup is complete, click Finish.
The Setup proceeds to installation of the Dashboard application.

The SQL Server instance takes the name computer\SPECTOR360, where computer is the name of the machine where the database is installed.
