The system requirements for each component of Spector CNE are described below. The Spector CNE software consists of the Server Components, the Data Viewer, and the Client Recorder. By default, all Server Components are installed on the computer (Administrator Station) where you are running the Setup program.
Recommended CNE Configuration
We recommend initially installing all Spector CNE Server Components on one computer. Minimum requirements for installation of all Server Components (Primary Server, Data Vault, Control Center) plus a Viewer on one machine are as follows:
Operating
System:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista
Windows 2000
Windows 64-bit Editions
Disk
space:
At least 1 GB free to install and begin recording Clients. The average
Client will use 10-30MB of hard drive space per day in Data Vault storage.
From the Control Center Properties, you can configure the Data Vault to
automatically delete files after a certain time period, if desired. See
the Spector CNE Administrator's Guide.
Network setup:
TCP/IP Network access to Clients is required for remote installation
and configuration. Optional Internet access to the SpectorSoft web site
allows registering, licensing and automatically obtaining the unlock code
during the installation process. See Server
Components and the Network.
Domain Administrator Login:
Spector CNE requires Administrator Privileges on the Server computer
as well as on any Client computers for remote Client Recorder installation.
Use of a domain administrator account is suggested. See Client
Recorders and the Network.
Static
IP address:
Assigning the Server computer a static IP address ensures Clients will
be able to communicate with the Data Vault and Primary Server.
If there is not enough free hard disk space on one computer for all Server Components, you can install the Server Components separately. For example, if you are concerned about space required for the Data Vault, you could install the Primary Server and Control Center on one computer, and the Data Vault on its own computer. All computers should have static IP addresses and be able to communicate across the network.
Note: You are free to install components on multiple computers, but you can install only ONE Primary Server per serial number. The Primary Server will control how many Client Recorders you can install.
Primary Server Only Requirements
The Primary Server is a Windows service that provides licensing and updates to Clients and can be installed separately from other Server Components. All Clients and the Control Center must be able to communicate with the Primary Server computer. On its own, the Primary Server requires little system resources or network bandwidth:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista
Windows 2000
Windows 64-bit Editions
1 MB free space to install
Network access to computers being recorded
Static IP address
Internet access to SpectorSoft web site for serial number registration (optional)
Windows Firewall exception at IP port 16770 to allow Clients to retrieve licensing and configuration information (created on installation)
Computer is always on
Note: During setup, a connection to the Internet is required to download the latest installation files. Once the files are downloaded, the connection is not needed.
Control Center Only Requirements
The Control Center is a snap-in that installs with Microsoft Management Console 1.2 or higher (click for explanation). You can install the Control Center (with Data Viewer) separately anywhere on the network. The Control Center needs to communicate with all Clients, one Data Vault, and one Primary Server. The minimum requirements are as follows:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista
Windows 2000
Windows 64-bit Editions
1 MB free space to install
An account with Domain Administrator or Local Administrator privileges on client computers
One Control Center for each Data Vault
Network access to Client computers being recorded, Data Vault and Primary Server
With the Control Center, the following Windows Services are installed:
Microsoft Management Console: a graphical framework that hosts administrative tools to administer networks, computers, users, services and other system components. The Control Center is a MMC snap-in used to centrally manage a group of computers running the Spector Client.
Microsoft XML Parser: Provided with most Windows Operating Systems, the XML Parser is needed to process XML.

Alternative Configuration
|
The Data Vault receives and stores recorded data from the Clients. Install the Data Vault on a computer with the following minimum requirements:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista
Windows 2000
Windows 64-bit Editions
1 GB free to install
Storage space for each Client - calculate the average Client will use 10-30MB of hard drive space per day. From the Control Center Properties, you can configure the Data Vault to automatically delete files after a certain time period, if desired. See the Spector CNE Administrator's Guide.
Network access to Control Center and computers being recorded
Static IP address
Windows Firewall exception at IP port 16769 to allow Clients to communicate recorded events
Computer is always on
If you have a very large network, or plan to record networks at several locations, you can install Multiple Data Vaults. Each Data Vault requires its own Control Center.
The Data Viewer allows you to review Spector CNE Client event recordings. Access the Viewer from Monitor Users (or Monitor Computers) at the Control Center or as a stand-alone application. The Data Viewer can be installed separately anywhere on the network, given the correct requirements. The Data Viewer needs to communicate with the Spector CNE Data Vault or directly with a Client.
Windows XP Professional
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista
Windows 2000
Windows 64-bit Editions
Network Access to Client or Data Vault
1 MB free space
After installing Server Components at a central computer, use the Control Center to build the Client Install file and install a Client Recorder on each network computer you wish to record. See Installing the Client. Minimum requirements for Clients are as follows:
Operating
System:
Windows XP Professional
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista (see Notes below)
Windows 2000
Windows XP Home (see Notes below)
Windows 64-bit Editions*
Disk
Space:
50 MB free hard disk space. The Client stores recorded activities on
the local hard drive until it can push the data to the Data Vault. If
the Client cannot connect to the Data Vault, it will retain data until
a pre-configured size limit is reached, and then begins writing over old
data. You can configure this size limit for each Client computer from
the Control Center (Configure Computers
> Client Settings > Security > Client
Data Files). See the Spector CNE Administrator's Guide.
Network
setup:
TCP/IP Network Access to all Server Components on a Windows Domain,
Workgroup, or Novell Network
Windows
OS setup (see Notes
below):
Administrator share level access (C$) to computer
File and Printer Sharing must be enabled (applies to Vista)
Task Scheduler Service must be enabled for remote installation
Registry Services must be enabled for remote management
One License for each Client installed (e.g., a 50-Client license to install the Client Recorder on 50 computers) See Adding Client Licenses.

*Windows
64-Bit Editions |
To install or reconfigure the Client, the Control Center must have administrative C$ share (or equivalent) access to each Client computer. Using a Domain Administrator account is recommended.
On Windows Vista Client computers, be sure to enable File and Printer Sharing.
Client Recorders on XP Home and legacy Windows machines require special setup. See Client Recorders on Windows XP Home.
Task Scheduler and Registry Services are required only for remote installation and administration of the Client, not for its operation. Without these services the Client can still be installed manually and administered in "non-integrated mode."
