Sharing Data Vault Folders

The user of a Standalone Viewer must have Windows share access to the necessary folders on the remote Data Vault computer. Without share permissions, the user will not be able to use the Viewer to find and open directories containing recordings. You can specify sharing so that managers may access only the computer or user folders for their department.

Another approach to Data Vault security is to share the Data Vault folder, but set a special password to open the Data Vault files. Viewer users will be prompted for the password before files are displayed. Open the Control Center Properties > Data Vault and the Set File Password option.

To share the Data Vault folders:

  1. At the Data Vault computer, use Windows Explorer or My Computer to navigate to the base Data Vault directory, C:\SpectorData by default.

  2. To share all data, select the base folder for sharing.

The entire Data Vault is shared

  3. To share specific users or computers, select a user or computer directory within the Data Vault directory.

    Two user folders are shared

  4. Right-click on the folder and select Sharing or Sharing and Security (depends on your operating system).

  5. Use the Properties box to select Share this folder.

  6. Set Permissions for the users of Viewers who need access. Specify Read only access for viewing the data, unless you want the manager to be able delete recordings, which would require Full Control.  Click OK to set the permissions.

  7. Click Apply and OK to apply changes to the folder properties.

  8. When the user (in this case "manager01") logs in to Windows, opens the Viewer, and selects File > Open Directory, he/she will be able to navigate to the Data Vault computer and open files from the shared directories. Directories not shared with this Viewer user will not be visible.
