The following requirements allow the communication between the computers you will be recording (the Client computers) and Spector CNE Server Components. The notes in this topic apply to ALL Windows networks. For more about deploying on your particular network, read the appropriate topic:
The Control Center must have Windows local Administrator privileges (with the administrative C$ share enabled) on computers (a) to install the Client Recorder remotely and (b) to retrieve the status of the Client computer on the network. You need to give the Control Center service the Administrator account information when you install the service.
In a domain network, local Administrator privileges are automatically provided to a Domain Administrator user account, so it makes sense to use the Domain Administrator account for the Control Center installation.
If you do not have a domain network with a Domain Administrator account, you can modify each computer's local Administrator user group to include the Control Center user. For a Windows Workgroup, the exact same Administrator-level account (user name and password) must be added to each computer's local Administrator user group. See Deploying in a Windows Workgroup.
Note: Only the Control Center requires Client privileges. No other component requires privileges on Clients.
The Client computers must be able to resolve the computer names of the various Server Components. We recommend that you do NOT use DHCP on computers where you install Server Components because it changes the IP address on connection to the network, and the Clients may not be able to resolve the computer names. Make sure the computer(s) where you install the following components have a static IP address.
Primary Server
Data Vault Server
The Clients communicate with various Server Components using specific ports. If you install Server Components on a Windows XP computer, a rule will automatically be added to open the needed port in the Windows XP Firewall. Make sure these ports will be available for use by Spector CNE and do not interfere with other activity on your particular network. If necessary, you can change the SpectorSoft Server "Listen IP" ports from the Control Center Properties and the Client Server settings.
Control Center -> Client: Port 2468
Client -> Data Vault service: Port 16769
Client -> Primary Server: Port 16770
For your Spector CNE installation to work correctly, the following Server Components need to be on a machine that is up and running at all times.
Primary
Server
The Primary Server provides licensing to the computers that makes them
available to the Control Center and allows them to update the Data Vault
with recorded events. The Client periodically queries the Primary Server
for licensing validation, and recording will be interrupted if the Primary
Server is not available.
Data
Vault
The Data Vault service must be able to receive data from Clients. Every
four minutes, a Client will transfer 30 seconds worth of data to the Data
Vault, which immediately stores the data at
the central server. If unable to connect to the Data Vault, the Clients
will continue to record and store the recordings locally until the Data
Vault is accessible.
Spector CNE software components do NOT require access to the Internet. However, we highly recommend performing the Spector CNE Setup from a computer with Internet access. The latest files can be downloaded from the Internet, and the Spector CNE serial number can be registered immediately through a web connection (see Registering). In addition, if the Primary Server computer has Internet access, the Primary Server can receive software updates and distribute them to the Clients. These updates are made only when requested by the Spector CNE administrator.
