Spector Pro allows you to record activity on one computer and view it remotely from another computer on the network. Perform a Standard installation of Spector Pro on the computer you wish to monitor, and perform a Viewer Only installation on the computer from which you want to view the recorded data. Installing a Viewer Only does NOT require an additional software license.
Remote viewing works only if:
The computers are networked as a workgroup or as a domain.
A domain network is a group of computers in an interconnecting Windows network that share a common directory database, security policies and relationships with other domains. Functions are controlled by a System Administrator (Admin) who has administrative privileges for all computers in the domain. The Admin may install, change, open or delete anything in the network (files, programs, settings) from a central location (server).
A workgroup is two or more home or business computers sharing an Internet connection, printers or files. This peer-to-peer network has no central control. Settings and local administrator permissions are changed at each computer.
File sharing (and File and Printer Sharing) is enabled and the appropriate folder on the recorded computer(s) has been shared.

Spector Pro does not capture information on the computer with a Viewer Only installation. |
You may have downloaded Spector Pro from the web site, or you may have received a CD in the mail. In either case, the first window you see when you begin the installation is the Spector Pro Setup window.
Use of this product is subject to prior acceptance of the User Agreement and Spector Software License Agreement. After reading the agreements and indicating that you accept:
The Serial Number window opens. Enter a valid serial number (you can copy and paste it from the email you received from SpectorSoft confirming your purchase) and your email address. Click OK.

On the next installation panel, select Viewer Only. Click Start.

The following message appears. Click Yes to confirm the Viewer Only installation.

A Progress bar indicates that the program is successfully installing.

Once the installation is complete, the Release Notes window opens.

After reading the notes, click the X at the top right to close the window. The Spector Setup Complete window opens indicating that the Spector Pro Viewer has installed successfully. Click Finish.

To load data and verify the recording:
The next step is to load data from the monitored computer, and verify the recording:
Click Start and then click Spector Pro Viewer which appears at the bottom of the window. (If it does not appear in the Start menu, click Start > All Programs > Spector Pro Viewer).
The Viewer opens along with the Browse For Folder window. At this point, nothing has been loaded and the Viewer is a blank page.

In the Folder field, type the complete path of the hidden share that you recorded after installing Spector Pro on the monitored computer (see Data File Sharing. Include two back slashes, computer name, back slash, share name, and dollar sign (\\computer name\SPX$).

To make it easy to access the same folder next time, click Add to Favorites. Read Bookmarking Hidden Shares for more information. Click Open. The Browse For Folder window closes and a Progress bar indicates that data files are loading from the data file folder in the monitored computer. You can click Cancel to stop loading the data at any time.
When loading is complete, activity recorded from the monitored PC is displayed on the Viewer, indicating that data is being recorded properly for this computer.
NOTE: Loading files over a network is always "slower" than viewing them directly on the monitored computer.
Repeat this procedure for each monitored computer. However, to open the Browse For Folder window you must now select File > Open Data Files from the menu bar. Follow steps 2 and 3.

|
Each time you want to view recorded activity on a remote computer, the data must be reloaded. Open the Viewer, select File > Open Data File to open the Browse For Folder window (it takes you where you were last). Navigate to the share you want, or use Favorites and click Open. All available data files are loaded into the Viewer. |
Although optional, it is a good idea to bookmark
hidden shares to access recorded data more easily, if you have
not already done so. Otherwise, you have completed the Installation browse
sequence and you are ready to get
acquainted with the Viewer.
