Scenario 2 - Put a Stop to Unproductive Web Surfing at the Office

Problem

How can we tell if Jane Smith, the receptionist, is surfing for more than 15 minutes at a stretch during business hours? Her job does not require that she be on the computer very often.

Solution

Review User Activity first to identify unproductive behavior; then investigate further by viewing all the activities to see what she's doing. Block access to specific web sites or applications, if you need to.

To see an overview of user activity:

  1. From the Viewer, click the All Recordings tab, and then select User Activity.

  2. If more than one user shares this computer, select Data > Filter > by Windows Users in the menu bar. The Filter window opens. Click All -> so that all the names jump over to the Hide the following users column. Find Jane Smith's screen name, click to highlight it, and click <-Show. Her name jumps over to the Show the following users column, and it will be the only name in that column.

  3. Click OK to reload data. Only data for Jane Smith now displays in the Viewer.

  4. To view activity for a particular week, select Data > Refresh in the menu bar. The Refresh Data window opens. Select Monday's date in the From field and Friday's date in the To field. Click OK to reload data. Only data for the selected dates now displays in the Viewer.

  5. Click on the Summary pane to view a graphic display of the user's activity and inactivity.

  6. Drill down and click on a specific date within the week in the upper Navigate pane to isolate when activity was the greatest. It might be when you had an all-day conference to go to.

To determine what specific activities were going on:

  1. From the Viewer, click on each activity within the All Recordings tab. For example, you may see:

To block access to all web sites:

  1. Close all applications that are running and log off all users.

  2. Click Settings to open the Settings window.

  3. Navigate to Block Web Sites and click to open that pane.

  4. Click to place a checkmark next to Block Web Sites Access.

  5. Click to select Allow access ONLY to web sites in list and leave this blank. Click OK. All access to the Internet is completely blocked.
