complete coverage of the chat / IM conversations.
To access the Chat / IM pane:
Open the Settings window.
Locate Chat / IM Activity under Recording in the Navigate pane at left.
Click to open the Chat / IM Activity pane. This pane contains:

Under normal circumstances, you will not need to change advanced settings. SpectorSoft advises that only advanced users change these settings, as this could affect the ability of Spector Pro to reliably capture chat / IM data. From the Chat / IM Pane:
Click Advanced. A warning appears reminding you that changing the advanced settings could have an adverse effect on Spector Pro's ability to record. Click Yes to proceed. The Advanced Chat / IM Settings window opens.
IRC, MSN, AOL / ICQ, Yahoo, XMPP Ports - These are the ports commonly used by the chat / IM protocols listed. It is possible that the server is configured to use non-standard ports (perhaps by your ISP or network administrator). If this occurs you need to change these ports to conform to the server.
IRC, MSN, AIM / ICQ, AOL, Yahoo, XMPP Capture - Indicates whether the respective chat / IM conversations will be recorded using the High-Level, Low-Level, or Auto method. The defaults shown here are designed to provide nearly complete coverage. Use the dropdown list to select Disabled if you do not want to capture a particular protocol at all.
Low-Level Capture - Spector Pro monitors the known communications ports used by the chat / IM protocols. This is the preferred method for capturing chat / IM because it does not depend on the application performing the chat / IM conversation. It allows support for many versions of an Instant Message program such as AOL Instant Messenger AIM as well as third party Instant Message programs that interface with AOL AIM, like Trillian.
High-Level Capture - Spector Pro monitors specific versions of the most popular chat / IM applications and records the conversations directly from the application window. This method is used as a backup to the low-level method, because it relies on a specific version of a chat / IM application and the vendors of these programs (Microsoft, AOL, and Yahoo) are constantly releasing new versions which may no longer be supported by Spector Pro.
The high-level method is most useful for recording conversations from applications that use communications protocols not supported by the low-level methods, such as Windows Messenger configured for a Microsoft Exchange account. The high-level method is also useful for recording conversations from applications that have been configured to perform encrypted communications. With encrypted communications, the low-level method would capture the conversation, but it would be unreadable.
In general, Spector Pro detects a conversation using the low-level method first, unless the chat / IM application is using a communications protocol not monitored by Spector Pro, or the communications protocol is encrypted. If either of these is detected, Spector Pro uses the High-Level protocol.
Auto - If Auto is selected, Spector Pro uses either the Low- or the High-Level capture method, whichever one is activated first. The method changes for each chat / IM instance.
Disabled - This allows you to turn off specific chat / IM applications that you may not want to capture.
Capture Web IMs / OSCAR80 /MySpace443 / MSN Exchange / Skype - By default, these conversations are captured by Spector Pro. If you do not want to capture any one of them, click to remove the checkmark.
Click OK to accept the changes you have made, or Cancel to reject them. The Advanced Chat / IM Settings window closes.
Click OK to save the changes you have made, or Cancel to discard them. The Settings window closes.
