Chat / IM Activity Settings

Spector Pro automatically records both sides of chat and instant messages from many of the most popular applications. Use this feature to view entire conversations and print out transcripts. See Viewing Chat / IM Activity.

Use chat / IM settings to:

Turn chat / IM recording on and off.

Adjust IRC, MSN, AOL/ICQ, Yahoo and XMPP port settings, if necessary.

Adjust capture settings. Spector Pro uses various methods to capture conversations, and the default settings ensure that you have nearly complete coverage of the chat / IM conversations.

Accessing Chat / IM Activity

To access the Chat / IM pane:

  1. Open the Settings window.

  2. Locate Chat / IM Activity under Recording in the Navigate pane at left.

  3. Click to open the Chat / IM Activity pane. This pane contains:

Review the settings to be sure they reflect how you want to manage chat / IM activity.

Customizing Chat / IM Settings

Close all applications that are running and log off all users to ensure that new settings affect these applications and users.

To select recording options:

  1. Capture Chat and Instant Message Activity - By default, this box is checked to enable the recording of chat / IM activity.

Spector Pro allows you to block individual Chat/IM contact names. To do this, recording must be enabled.

  1. Click OK to save the changes you have made, or Cancel to discard them. The Settings window closes.

To change advanced settings:

Under normal circumstances, you will not need to change advanced settings. SpectorSoft advises that only advanced users change these settings, as this could affect the ability of Spector Pro to reliably capture chat / IM data. From the Chat / IM Pane:

  1. Click Advanced. A warning appears reminding you that changing the advanced settings could have an adverse effect on Spector Pro's ability to record. Click Yes to proceed. The Advanced Chat / IM Settings window opens.

  1. IRC, MSN, AOL / ICQ, Yahoo, XMPP Ports - These are the ports commonly used by the chat / IM protocols listed. It is possible that the server is configured to use non-standard ports (perhaps by your ISP or network administrator). If this occurs you need to change these ports to conform to the server.

  2. IRC, MSN, AIM / ICQ, AOL, Yahoo, XMPP Capture - Indicates whether the respective chat / IM conversations will be recorded using the High-Level, Low-Level, or Auto method. The defaults shown here are designed to provide nearly complete coverage. Use the dropdown list to select Disabled if you do not want to capture a particular protocol at all.

The high-level method is most useful for recording conversations from applications that use communications protocols not supported by the low-level methods, such as Windows Messenger configured for a Microsoft Exchange account. The high-level method is also useful for recording conversations from applications that have been configured to perform encrypted communications. With encrypted communications, the low-level method would capture the conversation, but it would be unreadable.

In general, Spector Pro detects a conversation using the low-level method first, unless the chat / IM application is using a communications protocol not monitored by Spector Pro, or the communications protocol is encrypted. If either of these is detected, Spector Pro uses the High-Level protocol.

  1. Capture Web IMs / OSCAR80 /MySpace443 / MSN Exchange / Skype - By default, these conversations are captured by Spector Pro. If you do not want to capture any one of them, click to remove the checkmark.

  2. Click OK to accept the changes you have made, or Cancel to reject them. The Advanced Chat / IM Settings window closes.

  3. Click OK to save the changes you have made, or Cancel to discard them. The Settings window closes.

Next you will review Web Site Settings.
