Verify Administrative C$ Share

The Client

In order to install and control the Client from the Control Center, you need access to administrator-level account credentials on the Client (usually a Domain Administrator). In addition, the administrative C$ share must be enabled at the Client computer. This allows the Control Center to manage and configure the Client.  By default, computers operating under Windows 2000, XP Pro, and Vista have C$ share enabled.

You can use the Control Center Diagnostics tool to verify whether the administrative C$ is shared at a particular Client.  

To verify Administrative Share at the Client:

  1. Go to the Manage Computers view of the Control Center.

  2. Right click on the computer you wish to check.

  3. From the pop-up menu, select All Tasks > Diagnostics.

  4. Click the Admin Check button.
    The diagnostic test verifies that a file can be copied to the C$ share of the selected network computer.

  5. If this test fails it could be that:

  2. C$ share is not enabled. See below.

  3. The account you are logged in under does not have permissions to access the administrative C$ share on the Client. Make sure you are using an account with Administrator privileges on the Client.

If you choose NOT to enable C$ share on a computer, it's possible to install the Client Recorder manually and manage the computer in non-integrated mode. You will be able to view recordings from the Client.

To enable Administrative C$ Share at the Client:

If the administrative C$ share is not enabled, you can enable it at the network computer.  

  1. At the Client computer, open My Computer.

  2. Right click on "Local Disk (C:)" and select Properties.

  3. Select the Sharing tab and verify that C$ has been shared.

To share C$ on Windows 98/ME:

  1. Enable Remote Administration. Select Start, Settings, Control Panel and Passwords.

  2. Select the Remote Administration tab.

  3. Click to check Enable remote administration of this server.  

    The "Domain admins" group will be added to the list by default.  If you are a member of the Domain Administrators group, you do not need to do anything else.  Click OK.  If you are not a member, you will need to add your user account to the list by clicking on the Add button. In addition to providing access to C$, enabling Remote Administration also enables Remote Registry Service, if the service is installed.  This service is also required to allow the Control Center to communicate properly with the Client computer.
