Installing a Client from the Control Center

Manage Computers

After running the Deployment Utility to create a Client Install file, use the Manage Computers view to select the computer(s) to receive the installation. If you have trouble with the installation, make sure the Primary Server is running, and refer to Preparing Client Computers.

You can install the Client even when computers are turned off. The installation task will be performed when the user starts the computer (does not apply to Windows 98 or ME).

To install a Client:

  1. Select the Manage Computers view.

  2. Right-click on the computer or group in the list where you want to install the Client.
To install "in batch," see Installing in Batch.
To install on a group, see Installing the Client on a Group.

  3. Select Install Spector Client. If no license has been reserved for the computer, a message informs you that a license is now reserved. Click OK.

  4. In the file selection box that appears, select the Client Install (.sds) file to use. The default file is spsetup_Settings.sds in the Spector CNE folder. Click Open. Files are copied and the Install Schedule box appears.

Note: If the computer is "Not Detected," an error message will appear and the installation will not take place.

  1. To install now, select Install Spector Immediately and click OK.

To install at a time when the user will not be interrupted, deselect Install Spector Immediately and click Set Install Schedule. On the Schedule panel, select Once, set a start time, a day to run on, click OK, and click OK to close the Install Schedule box.

Note: It is not likely that you will need the Advanced scheduling features unless you are installing on a Windows 98 Client where the installation cannot take place when the user is logged out. In this case, you may want to set times to retry the task and a time at which to stop trying.

  1. When the schedule is set, the Set Account Information box may appear.
You may need to supply Administrator credentials for installation privileges on the Client computer (such as Domain Administrator).  Enter the User Name (domain\username) for the Administrator account, then enter and confirm the password. Check Remember Credentials for this Session to reuse these credentials to install/uninstall during this Control Center session without re-entering them. Click OK.

  2. A message confirms that the Spector Client has been scheduled to install on the computer. Click OK. If you are installing "immediately," after several minutes right-click and select Refresh to see the change in the computer's status in the Manage Computers view.

On installation, the Client Service attempts to contact the Primary Server to verify its product license. If it cannot find the Primary Server, or if all Client licenses have already been reserved or used, the Client will NOT be installed.
