File Storage Location

Master Dashboard Login, Allow Database Maintenance
Perform at Data Vault Computer

To view the screen snapshots and the email attachments, the Dashboard users need (at minimum) read-only privileges on the Data Vault computer.  The default location for the File Storage system is C:\Spector360Data on the Data Vault - Database computer, but can be any folder as defined during Spector 360 setup.  Rather than giving users full access (C$ Share) to the Data Vault, you can create new shares to give the Dashboard users just enough permission to view the necessary files.

To set up sharing, you must have Administrator privileges on the Data Vault computer. You can limit network user access to the computer at a more detailed Windows folder level, and then define a share at the top-level Spector 360 Data folder.

To create new shares:

  1. Use the Windows My Computer or Explorer interface to find the top-level File Storage (Spector360Data) folder on the Data Vault computer.

Email attachments are stored under attachments. Screen snapshot files are stored under snapshots, which may be divided into Domain and Local folders. Within a domain or local folder are folders labeled with user names. These folders collect the screen snapshots for the user.

Use the Windows interface to limit access to users at a more detailed level, as you wish.

  1. Return to the C:\ level where you can right-click on the Spector360Data folder and select Sharing and Security. Enable sharing and provide a Share name.

  2. Click Permissions to select a Group if you wish, and to make sure that "Read" is the only Permissions allowed.  Click OK, and OK again to change the folder Properties.

  3. In the Dashboard, select the Management tool and File Storage Location.

  4. Double-click a File Storage location in the right pane. The Edit Shared Name window appears.

  5. Enter the computer name and Share Name you gave the same folder (step 2 above). This gives Dashboard users access to the folder under the specified Share Name.

  6. Click OK. The Share Name is changed in the File Storage Location list.
