Installing the Client on a Group

Manage Computers

You can install the Client Recorder on a Group of computers rather than one at a time. For example, you could install the Client to all computers in a domain group.

It's possible to install the Client on multiple computers without using Group Management. See Installing in Batch.

To prepare to install on a Group:

  1. If you haven't done so, enable Group Management.
Right-click the Control Center > Properties > General.
    See Enabling Group Management.

  2. Make sure Background Computer Updating is enabled.
Right-click the Control Center > Properties > Network.
    See Control Center Properties: Network.

  3. Make sure you have an available license for each Client you plan to install.

  4. Select Manage Computers.

  5. Run the Deployment Utility (Action > Deployment Utility).
See Using the Deployment Utility. Make sure the settings you select are appropriate for all computers in the group.

Group Settings
If you wish, define Deployment settings for different Groups. Do this by specifying a new file name for Settings.ini at the beginning of the Deployment wizard.  For example, in one Deployment build you might create "Executive.ini" settings for an Executive Group of computers. In the second Deployment build, you might create "Sales.ini" settings for a Sales Group. Having separate settings will facilitate re-deploying the Client when you upgrade.

To install on a Group

  1. In Manage Computers, click Show Groups Only below the right pane to list groups rather than individual computers.

  2. Right-click the group and select Install Spector Client.
A confirmation message appears asking if you want to install the Client on all computers in the group.

  3. Click OK.
If the Client is already installed on computers in the group, a message asks if you would like to re-install the Client on these computers.

  4. Click Yes to install / re-install on ALL computers in the group, or
Click No to install ONLY on computers that do not yet have the Spector Client.

  5. Configure the installation.
Select the Client Install file (spsetup_Settings.sds), provide an installation Task Schedule, and supply the credentials needed, just as for an individual remote installation from the Control Center. See Installing from the Control Center.

Use Domain Administrator credentials (user name and password) to ensure access to all computers.

  1. Click OK at the installation confirmation message.
A message confirms that the Spector Client will be installed on n of n total computers in the group. The installation on each computer will happen now or at the time you have scheduled. Keep in mind that if a computer is not detected in Manage Computers, the Client cannot be installed in this manner.
