Changing the Database

Opening the dashboard requires a login account and direct network access to the Spector 360 Database. A Dashboard login account uses either SQL Server authentication or Windows authentication.

Initially, there is only one SQL Server login account - the SA (System Administrator) defined during Spector 360 Setup.

Logging in

To log in to the Dashboard:

  1. Open the Dashboard.
Double-click the Dashboard icon on your Desktop or select Windows Start > All Programs > Spector 360 > Spector 360 Dashboard. Wait as the program loads and the splash screen appears.

Note: If the above login prompt does not appear when you start the Dashboard, you already have Windows authentication and do not need to log in again.

  1. Select a method of Authentication.

SQL  - Log in a SQL Server login account (such as SA). A Login name and Password will be required.

Windows  - Use the current Windows authentication as a Dashboard login. If the current Windows login is valid to start the Dashboard, simply click the Login button. The Login name and password are not required.

Windows authentication requires no login name or password.

  1. Select the Database.
Select your Spector 360 SQL Server  instance, computer\SPECTOR360, where computer is the Windows name of the computer where the Database is installed. If necessary, click the down arrow to display and select from a list of SQL Server instances.

  2. Enter your Login name.
    SQL authentication only.
SQL Server login is not case sensitive. Enter your Dashboard login name. Use SA for System Administrator.

  3. Enter your Password.
    SQL authentication only.
If you are logging in as SA, this password was defined during Spector 360 Setup.

SQL login requires a login name and password.

Note: The SA password requirements have changed for this version of Spector 360. Make sure you have the correct password.

  1. Click the Login button.

If the login fails, a message appears: "Unable to establish database connection" with the failed login information. Make sure the Database computer is up and running, that your Dashboard has direct network access to that computer, and that you are running the correct version of the Dashboard. Press OK to return to the Login prompt and try again, or press Cancel to exit the program.

Changing the Current Login

Using a SQL Server account, you can log in as a different user when the Dashboard is already open.

To change the login for a Dashboard session.

  1. Open the Dashboard Tools menu and select Change Database.
    The Login prompt appears.

  2. Enter login information for the other user using SQL Server authentication. For Windows authentication, you would need to close the Dashboard, log into the Windows system as an approved Dashboard user, and then restart the Dashboard.

  3. Click Login and wait for the Dashboard to reload.

Changing the Database

You can direct the Dashboard session to connect to a different Spector 360 Database. The database must be compatible with the currently installed Dashboard.

To change the database:

  1. Open the Dashboard Tools menu and select Change Database.
    The Login prompt appears.

  2. Select a Spector 360 SQL Server instance.
Click the arrow to display a drop-down list. Each database instance has the name computer\SPECTOR360, where computer is the name of the machine on which the database is installed.

  3. Log in using either Windows or SQL authentication.

  1. Click OK.
