Getting Started with Website Filtering

Website Filtering consists of defining rules that either allow or block access. Before you begin, have an Acceptable Computer/Internet Use Policy in place to provide guidelines. You need to know:

For example, you may define a rule that blocks all shopping sites except for an hour at noon and after work. You might add this to a rule that blocks all adult sites and all gaming sites all the time.

Server Web Filtering must be enabled in Client settings (via the Control Center) for Website Filtering to work. If the Local Web Filtering option has been selected for any Clients, the Web Filter Server will ignore those Clients, allowing local settings at the Client to take precedence. See the Spector 360 Administrator's Guide for instructions on configuring the Client for Server Web Filtering.

To set up a rule:

  1. Run the New Rule Wizard.
Decide whether a rule will Allow or Block access to web sites.  For example, you can either ALLOW shopping at noon or after work, or BLOCK it at all times except at noon and after work.

  1. Specify What to allow or block.
Select the domain categories that will be allowed or blocked. Start with the ready-made Web System Categories. The provided Shopping category includes Amazon.com, eBay.com, and other well-known shopping sites. As soon as additional problem sites filter through in the recorded data or within the Dashboard's detected Domains list, create Custom Categories and add them to the rule to expand the rule's coverage.

  1. Specify When to apply the rule.
Each rule requires a Time Profile, such as the Spector 360 All Times Profile (provided) or a "Shopping/Personal" profile that you define. The shopping profile could be defined from 8 AM to 12 PM and 1-6 PM, Monday through Friday to BLOCK Shopping web sites.

  1. Specify Who the rule applies to.
Select the users the rule will affect. As long as the user is logged into the network, the rule applies.

  2. Decide whether you want this rule Enabled right away, or Disabled until you are ready to turn it on. Website Filtering will not take place until rules are enabled.
