Restoring a Backup

System Administrator (SA) Login Only

The System Administrator (SA) login can restore any Spector 360 Backup as long as the Backup data is compatible with the version of the Spector 360 Database that you are now using. Find out if a Backup is compatible by checking the Database Version under Backup and Restore.

If the Data Vault hard drive crashes, if the data becomes compromised, or if you need to move the data to a new computer, you will need to restore the latest Full Backup.

Note: We recommend restoring a Full Backup at the local database computer for safety.

Restoring a Displayed Backup

The Backup and Restore folder shows all backups for the current Spector 360 SQL Server instance that it detects. The default location for the Backup folder is:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Spctr_Backup\

The destination for future backups can be changed from the Database Configuration Management tool, in the Backup Location field.

During a restore, the Dashboard will close if users attempt to use it. Restore a Full Backup at a time when the fewest Dashboard users will be affected. During the restore, Dashboard users will not be able to connect to the database, all connections to the database will be dropped, and if a user attempts to access data, the Dashboard will close. See Full Restore Steps for more information.

To restore Backup data:

  1. Open the Management tool and select the Backup and Restore folder.

  2. In the right pane, select the Backup you wish to restore.

  3. Click the Restore Backup button on the toolbar or
    right-click and select Restore.

  4. On the dialog box that appears select whether or not you want users to be able to access the database before the restore is completely finished. Select Yes or No to continue the backup. See Full Restore Steps for help in making your choice.

The Full Backup and the latest Differential Backup are restored to the current SQL Server instance.

  1. Wait as the data is restored to the database.
If you have chosen to save Snapshots and Attachments for Backup/Restore (see Database Configuration), the Restore job will copy the Screen Snapshot and Email Attachment files to the specified destination folder, and the share names as previously defined will be updated in the CUST database.

Backup & Archive Options settings determine if snapshot/attachments are included

If Snapshots and Attachment files were not included in the Backup, a message appears telling you that only the database will be restored. The Snapshot and Email Attachment files will not be available. Click Yes to restore the database only.

  1. Exit out of the Dashboard, then reconnect.
The Restore job continues even as you exit the Dashboard. If you attempt to use the Dashboard database functions or reconnect to the database while the Restore is in progress, error messages will appear.  When you are able to login to the database, you know the Restore is complete and successful.
