System Administrator (SA) Login Only
If the Data Vault / Database computer has a system failure or hard drive crash, you can restore a Backup to a new computer. Several steps are involved. Read the steps in this topic carefully in order to avoid losing data.
When the Data Vault goes down, the Clients will continue recording. Clients will store all recorded data (up to a specified size limit) locally. As soon as the Data Vault service is configured and started at the new computer, and the Clients are pushed with new Data Vault settings, the Data Vault begins receiving the data from the Clients.
Note: This procedure assumes that you use media or a remote network location for daily system backups, and that previous Spector 360 Database Full Backups would be available.

Remember to give the new Data Vault / Database computer a static IP address so that the Clients will be able to find it. |
Start by installing Spector 360 Server Components on the new computer.
To re-install the Data Vault on a new computer:
Install Spector 360.
Run the Spector 360 Setup program (you can download the Setup or use
your Setup CD). You will need your serial number.
We recommend installing all Server Components together, but at
minimum direct the Setup to install the following components on the new
computer:
Server Components:
- Database
- Data Vault
These selections will install SQL Server, the Spector 360 Databases,
and the Data Vault Service (part of the Server Components). These components
are installed on the same computer to avoid complications and to facilitate
processing of data received by the Clients.
If the old Data Vault is still functioning, stop the Data Vault Service and then backup the current database. If your old Data Vault is not functioning, don't worry about the Data Vault Service unless the same IP Address is being used on the new computer. The new Data Vault Service will not receive Client data until you reconfigure the Clients to send their recorded data to the new computer.
Double-click the Data
Vault icon in the Windows system tray to display the Data Vault administration
window.

In the administration window, click Stop Service.
Use the Dashboard to perform an immediate Full Backup.

Update
Clients AFTER restoring the database. |
Create
"shares" for File Storage folders.
If you previously assigned file share privileges to users to gain access
to Screen Snapshot and Email Attachment files, you need to recreate the
shares on the new computer.
Use the Windows file system to create shares for the C:\Spector360Data folder or other folder you will use for File Storage. Right-click on the folder, select Properties, and Sharing. Click OK to save your specified share name and the permissions associated with it.
Start the Dashboard.
Open the Management
tool and select File Storage.
Specify the share name you just defined, following instructions in
Manage File Storage Location.
Before restoring the database, make sure (a) the Spector 360 Data Vault is fully installed on the new computer, (b) Clients are not yet sending data to the Data Vault, and (c) the File Storage location is shared as necessary (default is C:\Spector360Data). We recommend performing these next steps at the computer where the new Database is installed.
To restore a backup:
Open the Management tool and select the Backup and Restore folder.
Copy your latest Full Backup folder
to the hard drive of the new database computer.
You must restore data from a local folder. Use the Backup set that
has the most recent and complete set of data. You can always restore one
database, check the Database
Statistics to see what the database contains, and if necessary restore
a different Database.
Select a Full Backup to restore.
If the Backup is in the Backup and Restore list, right-click anywhere
in the right pane and select Restore.
If the Backup is not listed, right-click and select Browse Folder for Restore so that you can navigate to the local folder where the backup resides.
The Dashboard / Database verify
the shares.
If the Dashboard recognizes the shares in the Backup data as valid,
the folders of Email Attachments and Screen Snapshots are restored. If
the shares are not valid for the new computer, the Dashboard opens a dialog
box asking the user to select the valid shares. This dialog box also provides
an option to store the valid shares in the database.
Wait as the Restore job restores the
database from the Full Backup to the current database.
If you have chosen to save Snapshots and Attachments for Backup/Restore
(see Tools/Options), the Restore job will copy the Screen Snapshot and
Email Attachment files to the specified destination folder, and the share
names as previously defined will be updated in the CUST database.
Backup & Archive Options settings determine if snapshot/attachments
are included

If Snapshots and Attachment files were not included in the Backup,
a message appears telling you that only the database will be restored.
The Snapshot and Email Attachment files will not be available. Click Yes to restore the database only.
Exit out of the Dashboard.
The Restore job continues even as you exit the Dashboard. If you attempt
to use the Dashboard database functions or reconnect to the database while
the Restore is in progress, error messages will appear. When
you are able to login to the database, you know the Restore is complete
and successful.
When you are sure the Backup has been restored successfully, reconfigure the Clients to send data to the new Data Vault computer, and make sure the Data Vault Service is connected to the database and running.
To set up new Data Vault communication:
Open the Control Center. If necessary, build and install the Client on your network computers.
In the Deploy Utility (Manage Computers)
or in the Client Settings (Configure Computers), set the Server Communications
to address the new computer. Install or re-initialize the Spector Client
with your change. See the Spector
360 Administrator's Guide.

If necessary, START the Data Vault service so that data collected by the Clients can be processed and inserted into the newly restored database. Double-click the Data Vault icon and
Double-click the Data
Vault icon in the Windows system tray to display the Data Vault administration
window.

In the administration window, click Start Service if the button is available.
Make sure the Database Server lists computer\SPECTOR360 and that the Database Status is "OK, Connected."
Open the Dashboard and reconnect to the Database. The restored data and newly recorded Client data will be available.
