Install the Data Vault Service

The Data Vault Server is a Windows service that receives recorded events from Clients and stores them in the Database or in a file storage folder if the events are snapshots or email attachments. If you are using Setup to install ONLY a Data Vault Server, see below.

Note: If you direct the Data Vault Server installation to a computer remote from where the Spector 360 Setup is being run, the C$ Administrator share must be enabled on that remote computer or the service cannot be installed.

To install the Data Vault Service:

  1. At the Setup SQL Server Options panel, the computer where the Spector 360 SQL Server instance resides is displayed. To locate a different SQL Server instance, click the Browse button.  

Click Next to continue.

  1. Select a location for installing the Data Vault (DV) service.  
    It is recommended that you choose the computer where the Spector 360 SQL Server instance and Databases are located.  

Note: If you install the DV service separately from the Spector 360 Databases, be sure to install it using Network Credentials. This ensures the Windows DV service will have access to the SQL Server database instance.

Install on This Computer: Install the service on this computer. Select this choice of you are setting up the recommended Administrator Station with all Server Components. You do not need to install with Network Credentials in this case.   

Install on Another Computer (enter the computer name in the field below): Install the Data Vault server on a computer separate from the other Server Components.

Data Vault is Already Installed (enter computer name in field below). Use this option when the service is already installed and you do not want it to be changed - see Updating Spector 360.  

  1. Enter or browse to a Computer Name.
    If you did not choose "Install on This Computer," enter the Computer Name where the DV service will be installed.  Enter the Windows computer name or click the Browse button to locate the computer on the network.  

  2. Install DV Service with Network Credentials.
    This option is checked if you chose to install the DV service as a Network account. You can check this account if you would like to use different credentials different from those you are currently logged in under in order to install the Data Vault service.

Click the Credentials button.   

If you check this option and attempt to proceed (click Next) without using the Credentials button to supply account information, a message appears. If you have already supplied credentials for a previously installed service, you can click Yes to reuse those credentials (or No to enter new credentials).

Supply the domain\username and password for the network account.

Click OK, and Next to continue the Setup.  

If a Data Vault service is currently installed and running you are prompted to stop it now before the service is reinstalled. Click OK.

  1. Specify the base path to the location where Screen Snapshots and Email Attachments will be stored. The default path is C:\Spector360Data. If you wish, use the Browse button to find and select another location. Click Next to continue.

The location requires approximately 500 MB free disk space per user / per month. For example, to store 2 months of data for 30 users would require 500 * 30 * 2 = 30000, or 30 GB. The DV Service credentials must have full access to read and write files at this location. In addition, you will need to "share" the location with other Dashboard users.

To install ONLY the Data Vault Server:

All Server Components should already be installed at a central location. Each Data Vault Server can communicate with a central Database, but each Data Vault requires a Control Center application to manage its Client computers.  Install the Data Vault Server BEFORE you install the Control Center. Accept the License Agreement and enter your Serial Number before following the steps below.  

  1. Enter the computer where the Spector 360 SQL Server instance resides. Enter the SA password. Click Next.

  1. Wait for a script to test the connection.

  2. Select a Local System or Network account to run this Data Vault Server service. If you are installing a remote Data Vault and the central Spector 360 Database is at a different location, select Network.  

  3. Choose an installation path. The default is C:\Program Files\SpectorSoft\Spector 360. Click Next. Click Yes to create the path, if necessary.

  4. Select Install on This Computer to install Data Vault Server on the current computer. Select Install on Another Computer and enter the computer name if you are not running Setup on the computer where you want this Data Vault to reside.

  5. Click the Credentials button. Enter the Network account User Name and Password. Click OK.

  6. Click Next. If required, an exception is added to the Windows firewall rules at port 16769.

  7. Choose the File Storage Location for this Data Vault, by default C:\Spector360Data. The Data Vault will store Screen Snapshots and Email Attachments at this location.  If you are using a centralized Database with File Storage location, you can use this Data Vault's Control Center after installation to change the path to the central location.

  8. Wait as files are installed. Click Finish.
