Client Service
The Client Service (Service) is a software module installed as a Windows service on each network computer as a part of the Spector Client (Client) installation.
The Service is responsible for providing a command interface for the Control Center, allowing the remote configuration of the Client installation. The Service provides information to the Control Center about the status of the installation.
The Service communicates with the Primary Server regarding licensing information and retrieval of program updates. Upon initial installation of the Client, recording will not begin on the computer and the Service will not allow communications from the Control Center, until the Service is able to communicate with the Primary Server and verify its license. Once the license is verified, recording will proceed even if communication with the Primary Server is later lost, such as the case of a laptop periodically removed from the network. In this case, (the Service is unable to communicate with the Primary Server) recording will continue, but the recorded events will not be uploaded to the Data Vault. The Service must maintain periodic communication with the Primary Server in order to continue to upload recorded events to the Data Vault.
The Service communicates with the configured
Data Vault server to upload recorded events from the computer. It is possible
that the Data Vault is not available to receive recorded events because
it is not configured to archive events, the Data Vault server is offline,
communication on the network has been disrupted, or the computer has been
removed from the network (as in the case of a laptop).
If the Service is unable to transmit the recorded events to the Data Vault, the information will continue to be stored on the computer, subject to the configuration parameters for days of recording and maximum storage space available. When communication is restored, all recorded events will be automatically uploaded to the Data Vault, assuming the Data Vault is configured to archive recorded events
The setting for the Data Vault to archive recorded events is configured through the Control Center's Manage View>Properties>Data Vault tab
Verification that the
Service is installed, started, and communicating properly can be made
by:
Selecting the computer in the Control Center Manage Computers view
Selecting Refresh
Checking that the Recorder column displays the version number and build number of the Client software. If the Recorder column displays v0.0 (0000) then the Service is out of communications. Please see Troubleshooting the Client to remedy this problem
Though the Service is installed as a Windows service, it is sufficiently hidden so that it will not be observed by the computer's user—unless they specifically know what to look for and where. In addition, the Service cannot be uninstalled from the computer unless the user has Administrator privileges to remove the service.
