Days of Recordings/Setting

Snapshot Storage

By default, Spector will capture 5 days of snapshot recordings up to a maximum disk storage size of 50 megabytes. Spector will automatically start deleting the oldest recordings whenever there are recordings older than 5 days or the disk space required by ALL of the snapshots exceeds 50 megabytes.

This means you do not have to worry about Spector exceeding the maximum disk storage space configured. The program will manage this for you. It also means Spector will delete the oldest snapshots recorded if they exceed the Snapshot configuration.

If you do not want Spector to delete snapshots older than a certain number of days, and you ONLY want to delete snapshots after the maximum disk storage space is exceeded, then configure the Delete snapshots older than option to be zero (0) days.

If you change Spector to take snapshots more frequently than once every 30 seconds, or if you change the program to take snapshots in color, you will need to increase the disk space allowed on your hard drive.  This is especially important if you wish to capture and hold 5 days of data.

The amount of disk storage required by your snapshots will depend on a number of

factors, including:

Use the Calculate Average Usage button located within the Security> Snapshots window to get an estimate of the average amount of disk space used each day. This can be a guideline to increase or decrease your maximum disk storage configuration in order to retain as much historical information as needed.

You may find it necessary to archive Snapshots for later review. Review the section on Spector Client File Management for information on saving data files for archival purposes.

Email Storage

By default, Spector will hold 10 days of recorded emails, or 10 megabytes worth of disk space. The program will automatically start deleting the oldest email recordings when it runs up against one of these limits. For example, if recorded emails are taking 2 megabytes per day, then Spector will only hold 5 days of email recordings before it starts automatically deleting the oldest data.

Some emails have "attachments" that Spector can optionally save. For example, a user may send a picture to a friend, and this picture would be sent as an attachment. By default, Spector does NOT record attachments in email. If you wish to enable this feature, simply put a checkmark inside the box labeled Capture Attachments. You can always disable this feature by removing the checkmark.

Email attachments are generally much larger than normal messages. Therefore, if many attachments are received, you may need to increase the amount of hard drive space that you allow Spector to use for email. By default, Spector does NOT save attachments for emails, in the interest of allowing you to keep more data. However, you may set Spector to record email attachments within the Settings>Email window.  The default value for the maximum size of email attachments is 100 Kb, but is adjustable up to 1 MB.

Chat/IM Storage

By default, Spector will hold 10 days of recorded chat/IM conversations, or 3 megabytes worth of disk space. It will automatically start deleting the oldest chat/IM recordings when it runs up against one of these limits. For example, if recorded chat/IMs are taking 1 megabyte per day, then Spector will only hold 3 days of chat/IM recordings before it starts automatically deleting the oldest data.

Keystroke Storage

By default, Spector will hold 10 days of recorded keystrokes, or 1 megabyte worth of disk space. It will automatically start deleting the oldest keystroke recordings when it runs up against one of these limits.

Web Storage

By default, Spector will hold 10 days of Web files, or 1 megabyte worth of disk space. The program will automatically start deleting the oldest recorded Web files when it runs up against one of these limits.
