Installation Requirements

To remotely install the Spector Client (Client) component on your network computers (using the remote install features provided by the Spector CNE Control Center), there are Windows network management capabilities that must be installed and enabled on these computers.

In addition to the remote install requirements listed below, there may be other Client Install Considerations to review.

The Windows network management capabilities that must be enabled on your network or available on the Client computers include:

Remote Registry Services

The Windows Remote Registry Service capabilities on a network computer enable the Spector CNE Control Center to provide the status information displayed in the Manage Computers view. If a computer is displayed as Not Detected in the Manage Computers view and you are sure it is connected to the network and turned on, it is most likely that the Remote Registry Service capabilities are not enabled for that computer or you do not have Administrator privileges to access it. To verify this:

  1. Right click on the computer name in the Manage Computers view

  2. Select All Tasks>Diagnostics…

  3. Click on the Registry Check button

Windows NT, 2000, and XP Professional

By default, Windows NT, 2000, and XP Professional are pre-configured with the Remote Registry Services enabled. If the Remote Registry Service is disabled, it MUST be enabled so that you may use the CNE Control Center for remote installations.

To enable Remote Registry Services on your Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro computers:

  1. Open the Control Panel

  2. Select Administrative Tools

  3. Select Services

  4. Find the Remote Registry Service

  5. Verify that it runs on System Startup

Note: For Windows NT, start the Task Manager and verify that the winlogon.exe process is running. Winlogon.exe on Windows NT 4 contains the Remote Registry Services.

Windows 98 and ME

By default, Windows 98 and ME DO NOT have the Remote Registry Services installed. To install Remote Registry Services on Windows 98 and ME computers:

  1. Open the Control Panel

  2. Select the Network icon

  3. On the Access Control tab select User-Level Access Control

  4. On the Network Configuration page, click on the Add button and choose to add a Service. A dialog box will open presenting you with a number of different options

  5. Click on the Have Disk button

  6. Insert your Windows CD-ROM and navigate to one of the following locations:

  1. Click on the OK button. Windows will install the Remote Registry Service to your computer

  2. Close the Network Options

  3. Restart your computer

Note: It is possible that there are a significant number of Windows 98/ME computers on your network that you would like to monitor with Spector CNE, but they do not have Remote Registry Services enabled. If the task of enabling Remote Registry Services on each network computer is prohibitively expensive or time consuming, it is still possible to use the Spector CNE Control Center to facilitate remote installations of the Client without Remote Registry Services enabled. To perform the installation you must tell the Control Center that the computer is considered to be in "non-integrated" mode, which allows you to configure the details of the managed computer instead of the Control Center using Remote Registry services to determine this information. See the Control Center>Manage Computers view about configuring a Client for management in "non-integrated" mode.

Before configuring a Windows 98/ME computer for management by the Control Center in "non-integrated" mode, you should first verify that other network functionalities described below are available on that 98/ME computer. The lack of these functionalities may make it easier to either:

Windows XP Home

Windows XP Home DOES NOT support Remote Registry Services. It does not allow network Administrator file sharing. Therefore, a remote install using the CNE Control Center is not possible. An installation to an XP Home computer on your network can be accomplished by performing a Manual Client Installation.

File and Printer Sharing

File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is a software component installed and enabled for each network connection on your network computers. This Windows software component allows other computers on your network to access the resources of the network computer. File and Printer Sharing requires enablement in order for the Spector CNE Control Center to retrieve status information and perform remote installations to the network computers.

To verify that File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the network computer:

  1. Go to the Manage Computers view of the CNE Control Center

  2. Right click on the computer name and select All Tasks>Diagnostics…

  3. Press the Admin Check button to verify that files can be shared on the network computer. If this test fails it could be that:

Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro

File and Printer Sharing is enabled by default on Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro computers.

Windows 98 and ME

To enable File and Printer Sharing on a Windows 98/ME computer:

  1. Open the Control Panel

  2. Click on the Network icon

  3. Select File And Print Sharing

  4. Select both the I want to be able to give others access to my files and I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer(s) options

  5. Click on the OK button

  6. Close Network Options

  7. Restart the computer

Administrator Permissions

In order to copy files and perform installations to a network computer using the CNE Control Center, you must have the appropriate user permissions for the computer to which you are installing. In particular, the user login performing the installation from the Control Center must have Administrator permissions for the remote computer. To verify that you have the appropriate Administrator Permissions for the network computer:

  1. Go to the Manage Computers view of the CNE Control Center

  2. Right click on the computer name and select All Tasks>Diagnostics…

  3. Press the Admin Check button to verify that a file can be copied to the C$ share of the network computer. If this test fails it could be that:

Windows Workgroup

If your network is a Windows Workgroup, the user login that is being used to run the Control Center must be the same local user login with Administrator privileges on all the network computers to which you wish to remotely install and manage with the Control Center. For example, if you login to a computer with a user account called Administrator, a password of Test, and run the Spector CNE Control Center in order to remotely install the Client onto any computer on your Workgroup network, there must be a local user account on each computer called Administrator with a password of Test.

Windows Domain

If your network is a Windows Domain, you will have the permissions to access the remote computer by running the Control Center from a user account that is part of the Domain Admins group.

Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP Professional computers that have joined a domain will have a domain-level group called Domain Admins assigned to the local computer's Administrator group.

Windows 98 and ME computers Do NOThave the domain-level group Domain Admins assigned to the local computer's Administrator group, unless Remote Administration has been enabled on the computer.

To enable Remote Administration and create the Domain Admins user group, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Control Panel

  2. Select the Passwords icon

  3. Select the Remote Administration tab

  4. Select the Enable Remote Administration of this Server check box

The domain-level group Domain Admins will automatically insert into the Administrator user group. In addition, the C$ Administrator share will also be created on this computer.

C$ Administrator Share

Windows networks allow file folders on a network computer to be shared and accessed by users on other network computers, if the file share has been created and the remote user has permissions to access the file share.

The Spector CNE Control Center facilitates the remote installation of the Client by copying the install file to the computer using the pre-defined C$ file share. The C$ file share is called an Administrator share because it is usually created by Windows when the computer is enabled for remote network administration and the permissions allow only an Administrator user account to access the file share.

To verify that C$ Administrator Share is enabled on the computer:

  1. Go to the Manage Computers view of the CNE Control Center

  2. Right click on the computer name and select All Tasks>Diagnostics…

  3. Click on the Admin Check button to verify that files can be shared on the network computer. If this test fails it could be that:

Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro

Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro have the C$ Administrator share enabled by default. For security reasons this share could be disabled by an Administrator. To verify that the C$ share is enabled:

  1. Open Windows Explorer

  2. Right click on "Local Disk (C:)" and select Properties

  3. Select the Sharing tab and you should see the configurations displayed below

Windows 98/ME

The C$ Administrator share is not enabled by default, but it is enabled automatically when the Remote Administration is configured as described above for Administrator Permissions requirements.

Note: When the Remote Administration is enabled for Windows 98/ME, the C$ share will be available but it will not be displayed when looking at the Share properties for the C: drive.

Task Scheduler

The Windows Task Scheduler is a software component, which allows any script or program to be scheduled for execution at a particular time. When the script or program is run by the Task Scheduler, it is run in the background.

The Spector CNE Control Center requires that the Windows Task Scheduler is installed and enabled on each computer on which you would like to install the Client remotely. The Client install file is created by the Spector Deployment Utility. Then it is copied to the computer and scheduled for execution by the Task Scheduler. Once the Task Scheduler of the computer has run the Client install file, the installation of the Client is complete. The recording of computer events by the Client will begin.

Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro

To verify that the Task Scheduler is enabled on the network computer:

  1. Go to the Manage Computers view of the CNE Control Center

  2. Right click on the computer name and select All Tasks>Diagnostics…

  3. Click on the Task Check button to verify that the Task Scheduler service is installed and enabled

The Task Scheduler is installed and enabled by default for Windows 2000 and XP Pro computers.

The Task Scheduler is not installed as part of the operating system for Windows NT. It is part of the Internet Explorer 5 (or greater) installation. You must perform a complete Internet Explorer 5 or greater installation for the Task Scheduler to be installed on your Windows NT computers.

Note: The Task Scheduler is not installed for partial or custom installations of Windows NT.

If the Task Scheduler has been stopped on a Windows NT, 2000, or XP Pro computer, the CNE Control Center will automatically start the Task Scheduler provided the user has Administrator privileges for the computer.

Windows 98 and ME

Remote access to the Windows Task Scheduler is not available with Windows 98/ME, though it is still used to perform a remote install of the Client install file by the Control Center. The remote install is facilitated by copying a scheduled task for the Client install file onto the remote 98/ME computer using the C$ Administrator Share.

To verify that the Task Scheduler has been enabled on the Windows 98/ME computer:

  1. Open the Control Panel Scheduled Tasks applet

  2. Select the Advanced menu item
