Introduction
The Spector Client (Client) software must be installed on your network computers in order to record the events you will be monitoring. The installation of the Client software is accomplished by running an install file on each network computer. The install file is a single .exe program, which is created by the Spector CNE Deployment Utility. The Deployment Utility allows you to pre-configure all the settings and configuration options for recording on the Client computer and then creates a single .exe file that executes and silently installs the Client on the network computers.
Once the install file is created by the Deployment Utility, the install file must now be executed on the network computers. There are two methods of getting the install file executed on the network computers:
The first method is to use the Control Center interface and the remote management features of your Windows network, to facilitate the copying and execution of the install file across your network
The second method is to manually execute the install file on the network computer by going to the computer on which you want to install the Client on and running the install file
Note:
The Deployment Utility creates the install file with a .sds
file extension. You will need to rename this file with a .exe
file extension if you are going to manually execute it on the Client computer.
Once the install file is executed on the Client computer and it has restarted, the Client will record events, and will communicate with the Spector CNE Server Components. This will allow you to remotely configure and view the computers from the Control Center even though you may have had network limitations that forced you to proceed with a manual install of the Client.
In order to install the Client on your network computers using the remote install features provided by the Spector CNE Control Center, there are Client installation considerations to review to ensure that your network and computers provide all the required management capabilities. In general, if you have a Windows network with a domain, are installing to Windows 2000 and XP computers, and you have not disabled the default network management capabilities on those computers, you should not encounter any problems installing the Client to your network computers. If you have a Windows Workgroup or are installing to Windows 98, ME, or XP computers, then there are special considerations to be made.
