Manual Install of Client

Spector CNE was designed to provide central management of the Client software, which performs the recording of events on network computers. The Control Center provides the central management capability to

The Control Center relies on the network management capabilities of a Windows network in order to perform remote installations of Spector Client. In general, these remote administration capabilities are enabled on all Domain networks with Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro computers.

If you have a Windows Workgroup network or have Windows 98, ME, or XP Home computers, it is likely that all the Client Installation Requirements for remotely installing the Client software are NOT configured.

If it is prohibitively time consuming or you are otherwise unable to configure your network computers to have the management capabilities required for a remote install, you have the option to manually install the Client install file on the computers to be recorded. While this requires you to physically visit and log into each computer, and execute the Client install file, this is a very straightforward and simple procedure.

To perform a manual install of the Client:

  1. Within the Control Center, right click on the Manage Computers view

  2. Select Deployment Utility

  3. Complete the build of the Client install file by pre-configuring all Client settings using the Deployment Utility. If you are installing on a network that is unable to resolve computer names, you may need to specify IP addresses for the Client server configuration settings instead of computer names

  4. When you have completed the build of the Client install file using the Deployment Utility, note the name of the created folder

  5. Access the created install file with Windows Explorer and rename it from a .sds file extension to a .exe file extension

  6. Copy this file to a CD, attach it to an email, put it into a shared network folder, or use any other means to gain access to this file from the computer upon which you would like to install the Client

  7. Run the Client .exe install file from the computer upon which is to be installed. The computer should restart automatically

  8. Once a user logs into the computer, the Client will begin recording and will store the recorded events in the Spector CNE Data Vault

The CNE Control Center can be used to:

See Managing Computers in Non-Integrated Mode for further information regarding the remote management of computers (which have had the Client installed manually) from the Control Center.
