Primary Server

Figure 1: Primary Server and Data Vault (Settings within Deployment Utility)
The Primary Server is a software component running on a network server that provides licensing and software updates to Clients. Each Client must be configured for a Primary Server computer in order to obtain the required licensing information, which will allow the Client to begin recording and continue recording events.
If communication with the Primary Server is never established, the Client will not begin recording events
If communication with the Primary Server has been established but is then subsequently lost, the computer will no longer push recorded events to the Data Vault nor will it be able to be configured remotely
Upon initial installation, the Client Service will attempt to contact the Primary Server to verify the Client's software license. If the Client Service is unable to initially contact the Primary Server, Spector will not begin recording and the Manage Computers view of the Control Center will display “V 0.0 (0000)” in the Recorder column. This indicates the Client software is installed but it is unable to communicate with the Client Service. The Client Service will attempt to contact the Primary Server once every minute in order to establish the initial communications, which will provide the Client software license. This allows the Client to begin recording and to be configured by the Control Center.
After the initial contact with the Primary Server and after the Client license is established, the Client Service contacts the Primary Server every four hours to verify the continued validity of the software license.
If contact with the Primary Server is lost, the Client will attempt to contact the Primary Server every hour to re-establish communications and to validate the software license.
If the Client Service is unable to re-establish communication with the Primary Server after 24 hours, then the Client will continue to record events but it will NOT push those events to the Data Vault. In addition, the Client cannot be managed remotely by the Control Center
Note:
It is critical that the correct Primary Server configuration is made at
installation time. Typically, the Deployment
Utility does this automatically. If you suspect that the wrong setting
for the Primary Server has been made for your Client installation, it
is best to change the installation configuration. Install the Client again.
It is likely that you will NOT be able to remotely communicate with the
Client in order to change the Primary Server setting, as the Control Center
will not communicate with the Client.
Primary Server Information
Server Name Enter the computer name or IP address of the Primary Server computer. This computer must be running the Spector CNE Primary Server service software. The default will be the Primary Server computer name configured during the Client installation.
Server Port Enter the IP port address for communication with the Primary Server. The default is port 16770.
|
WARNING: The Server Port value of 16770 should NOT be changed unless there is a port conflict on your network. If the Server Port Configuration is changed, it must match the Port configuration given to the Primary Server installation.
