Windows 98/ME

In order to use the CNE Control Center to remotely install the Spector Client (Client) to a Windows 98/ME computer on your network, there are many considerations to be made. In general, if your network is a domain and you are already remotely managing the Windows 98/ME computer as an Administrator then you may already have the Windows 98/ME computer configured with the installation requirements.

If the Windows 98/ME computer is in a Windows Workgroup network or it is on a domain network, but it has not been remotely administered, it is likely that not all the remote management installation requirements have been configured. If this is the case, we strongly suggest that you consider performing a manual install of the Client, rather then spending the extra time and effort to configure the Windows 98/ME computer for remote management on your Windows network.

If you wish to proceed with configuring your Windows 98/ME computer for remote management, which would allow a remote installation of the Client, review the installation requirements for Spector Clients as well as considerations for Windows Workgroups. Further information can be found in Spector CNE Knowledge Base articles.

Once the network remote management installation requirements have been configured for your Windows 98/ME computers, installing the Client is accomplished in the same manner as all other Windows computers on your network. Other considerations to be made are specific to Windows 98/ME:

Scheduled Remote Install

The Windows 98/ME Task Scheduler will not allow a scheduled task to be run immediately. If Run Immediately is selected when installing the Client to a Windows 98/ME computer, the Control Center will actually schedule the installation for five minutes in the future.

Network Connections may fail Restart

After installing or uninstalling the Client, the network computer will be instructed to restart, provided this default option was configured with the Deployment Utility. On Windows 98/ME computers, if there is a network connection made to the computer, Windows will warn the user that a network connection is active to the computer and ask whether it should be disconnected before restarting the computer. If the user answers "no", then the computer will not be restarted.

Note: The Spector CNE Control Center may have an active network connection to the Windows 98/ME computer by trying to update the status of the computer with background updating option. It is recommended that for the installs/uninstalls to Windows 98 and ME computers, the Auto Update Console Computers In Background option is temporarily disabled until after the remote installations to Windows 98/ME computers has been completed.
