Windows XP Pro
Installing to XP Pro in a Workgroup
If you are installing the Spector Client (Client) to a Windows XP computer and are operating in a Windows Workgroup, the network access local security policy of the Windows XP computer will be configured for Guest Only mode by default. Guest Only mode treats all network logins (remote access) to the computer as having Guest account privileges even if the account being used is a local Administrator account. This Windows XP configuration is discussed in the following Microsoft article: www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/proddocs/standard/506.asp
Note:
This does NOT affect XP Pro computers connected to a network domain.
If the XP Pro computer is still configured on your Workgroup network with Guest Only network access policy, you will not be able to remotely install the Client using the Control Center. The network access security policy must be changed to Classic mode as described in the above Microsoft article.
To change this policy:
Go to the XP Pro computer and login with a local Administrator account
Open Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Local Security Policy
Expand the Local Policies folder and select Security Options folder
Scroll down and select the key called Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts
Double click and select Classic - local users authenticate as themselves, then select Apply
Close the window and restart the computer
Install Fails to XP Pro if HID Service Installed
If you are installing to a Windows XP Pro computer, which has the Human Interface Device Access (HID) service enabled, it is possible that the installation will give a status that it was successfully completed, but the install will never take place. This is because of a known bug with Windows XP Pro SP1 described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 812400, which prevents programs from executing when scheduled remotely with the Windows Task Scheduler and the HID service is enabled.
The HID service is not normally enabled but can be turned on by the software installations of pointing devices. If you suspect the Client install has not taken place:
Select the computer in the Control Center Manage Computers View
Right click and select All Tasks>Diagnostics…
Select the Task Check button. This diagnostic test will check to see if the HID service is enabled on the computer and provide a warning if it is.
Workarounds for this problem include:
Disable the HID service on the XP Pro computer and then restart the computer. This can be done remotely
This bug is not an issue if the XP Pro computer has been physically logged into by using the same account to which you are trying to install the Client. Go to the XP Pro computer and log into it with your domain Administrator account, logout, and then proceed with the CNE installation
Update the computer with the Windows XP Pro service pack that fixes this bug
In order to remotely disable the HID service:
Open the Services Manager on the CNE Control Center Computer (Control Panel> Administrative Tools>Services)
Right click on the Services item in the tree view on the left and select Connect to Another Computer…
Type the name or IP Address of the computer to which you wish to connect to and click on the OK button. Unless an error occurs, the Services displayed will now be on the remote computer in question
Find the HID Input Service (also referred to as Human Interface Device Access) and double-click.

Set the Startup type to Disabled and click on the Stop button, if possible

Click on the OK button
You should now remotely reboot this computer from the Spector CNE Control Center
