The Client Recorder
The Client Recorder captures and records almost all email. When email is sent or received, the Client creates a hidden duplicate of the email (and its attachments, if so configured) to store for later review. It also keeps a copy of deleted email.
SpectorSoft is constantly updating the Client Recorder as new email technologies emerge. For the latest information, see our Knowledge Base.
Each message sent or received is recorded as an event.
Date and time of email
To, From, CC, and BCC addresses
Subject line
Message contents
Type of message (SMTP, Webmail, AOL, etc.)
Whether or not there is an attachment
If desired, the actual file attached

Email Activity recording reveals:

The following email types are recorded:
SMTP/POP Email - The Client records all SMTP/POP email. Popular Windows programs that send and receive email directly from the computer using the SMTP / POP protocols include Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Incredimail, and Eudora.
Exchange/MAPI Email - The Client records Microsoft Exchange and other applications using MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) for messaging. The MAPI protocol allows a user to log in to an Outlook mailbox from any computer. When the user logs in, any opened messages, and messages sent from the computer are recorded. See More about Exchange Email.
AOL Email - The Client records email sent and received from AOL Mail or AOL Communicator, when Communicator is configured to send and receive as an SMTP/POP account. AOL attachments are not recorded. Web-based AOL email is recorded as Webmail (see below).
IMAP Email - The Client records email received via IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) when the email is opened. The IMAP protocol allows a local client email application to download email from a remote server without deleting it from the server. Mail clients that may be configured to receive email via IMAP include MS Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, and Eudora.
Webmail - The Client records email sent and received in web browsers, such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, and so on, when the email message is opened to be read or composed. Unread messages listed in a Webmail account are not recorded until they are opened. Webmail attachments are not recorded. For a full list of all Internet email Web sites recorded, see More About Web Email.

AOL, Webmail, IMAP The Client records AOL, Webmail, and incoming IMAP email when the message is opened for reading by the user. The Client does NOT record attachments to AOL or Webmail messages. |
Several types of email are not currently recorded by the Client Recorder. However, you can still record user activity by enabling keystroke recording and screen snapshots. The following are known email interfaces NOT supported by the Client:
Lotus Notes - Lotus is a division of IBM and Notes is their Windows enterprise messaging system. This is analogous to the Microsoft Exchange product.
Novell Groupwise - Novell's enterprise messaging system. This is similar to Microsoft Exchange.
Yahoo - "Personals" messaging is not captured, though all other email sent or received from within the Yahoo Web site interface is recorded.
AOL Communicator - The Client does not currently record email sent/received within AOL Communicator UNLESS mail is configured to be sent and received as an SMTP/POP account.
Webmail Attachments - The Client does NOT capture email file attachments sent or received using Web email accounts (Yahoo, Google, Hotmail, etc.).

If email is NOT recorded: You can still review the user's activity from Keystrokes Typed in the email application or from the periodic Screen Snapshots. |
