Manage Computers

When you have hundreds, dozens, or even just more than five computers to record, it makes sense to manage the computers as a group instead of one at a time. Spector CNE Group Management allows you to treat multiple Client computers as one.  With a single action, you can install or change the configuration of all Clients in the group.

Spector CNE automatically groups computers you've already added to the Control Center by Domain or Workgroup.  In addition, you can define your own groups that include any computers. To get started, you need to activate Group Management.

Enable Load List on Startup

For Group Management to work, you need to populate the Control Center with a computer list loaded from a file at startup, rather than discovering computers on the network.  This ensures the same computers are found and "grouped" whenever you start the Control center.  More...

To check the startup method:

  1. Right-click the Control Center icon and choose Properties.

  2. Click the Network tab and make sure your Control Center Properties Network settings are as follows:

If you have switched  to "Discover All Network Computers," you should:

  1.  Exit out of Control Center Properties.

  2. Create a list from the computers currently displayed in the Manage Computers view. See Saving a New List or Creating a Quick Computer List.

  3. Once the list is created, return to Control Center > Properties > Network and click Select to choose your list for loading on startup.

Enable Background Updating

For Group Management to be successful, you need to enable Background Computer Updating. This ensures that delivery and status tasks will take place in the background so multiple tasks (needed for groups) don't time-out and fail.  More...

To check background updating:

  1. Right-click Control Center and select Properties to open the Control Center Properties box.

  2. Click the Network tab.

  3. Make sure Background Update of Control Center Views is checked.

Enable Group Management

To turn on Group Management functionality:

  1. Right-click Control Center and select Properties to open the Control Center Properties box.

  2. Click the General tab.
Click to check Enable Computer Group Management.

  3. Click Apply and then click OK to close the Control Center Properties box.

Once you complete these steps, you can treat all computers on your "HOME" domain or "MARKETING" workgroup as one computer. Check it out by selecting Manage Computers and clicking on Show Groups Only at the bottom of the right pane.  See Manage Groups of Computers for more about reading group status and the "Show" options.
