Spector CNE
Administrator's Guide
By default, the Viewer loads the last 15 days of recorded events for the local computer. Events appear in the Viewer chronologically by event type. However, you are not limited to the date range or user automatically loaded. From the Viewer you can review recorded events for:
The local Client computer
A user or computer in the Spector CNE Data Vault
Users or computers in a Spector CNE archive
Any user or computer listed on the Favorites menu
|
|
Note that loading any data beyond the local computer requires share access to the folder containing the data (if you do not have a Domain Administrator login). See Sharing Data. |
Recorded data automatically loads if it exists on the local computer. You would not have to "open" data when using a Viewer installed with a Client to view the Client. If you expect to see local data and none appears, you may need to Refresh the view and change the date range. See Refreshing Data.
When you double-click a user or computer from the Control Center's Monitor Users or Monitor Computers view, recorded data for your selection automatically loads. By default, the 15 most recent days are loaded from the Data Vault. You can Refresh to add or remove days. See Refreshing Data.
If you are using a standalone Viewer or even the Viewer accessed from the Control Center, you can switch to a different data set.

|
Standalone Viewer users will need Share privileges to read data in the Data Vault folders. See Sharing Data or ask your network administrator for assistance. |
To load data for a different user:
Open the Viewer.
Open the File
menu and select Open Directory.

Use the Windows Browse box to navigate to the computer where the CNE Data Vault is located, and then to the Data Vault root directory, for example, to C:\SpectorData.
Drill in to the Users branch of the directory.
Select a User folder and click
OK. Wait for the data to load.

Note that if the Data vault is set to record by Computer, the User folders may not have a full set of recorded data. Try opening the Computer folder instead. The Viewer allows you to open any User or Computer folder you have permission to access.
|
|
As soon as you locate and open a directory you will be reviewing regularly, click Add to Favorite on the Browse box or open the Favorites menu and select Add to Favorites. Next time, you will simply select the users (or computer) from the Favorites menu. |
To load data for a different computer:
Open the Viewer.
Open the File menu and select Open Directory.
Use the Windows Browse box to navigate to the computer where the CNE Data Vault is located, and then to the Data Vault root directory, for example, to C:\SpectorData.

|
|
If the Data Vault has been set to record by User, computer folders may not contain recorded data. If this is the case, navigate to and select a user folder instead. |
A CNE archive contains the same directory structure as the CNE Data Vault. You must have read-access share permissions to the archive folder if it is on a remote computer in order to view the data.
To load events from an archive:
Make sure your current login is included in the Share for the archive directory.
Follow directions above to load data for either a user or a computer, navigating to the archive folder instead of to the C:\SpectorData folder. The data files will open, and all recorded events will be loaded and arranged chronologically according to event type.
Once you add a user or computer to the Favorites menu, it's easy to open the remote directory of data. You can add a "favorite" using the Add to Favorites button on the Browse box or by opening the Favorites menu and selecting Add Favorites. See Using Favorites.
To load events from a "favorite":
Open the Viewer.
Open the Favorites
menu and select an item from the lower part of the menu.
Select a Favorite to Load the Folder

- or -
Select File > Open
Directory, and on the Browse for Folder box, click the Favorites
button. From the Favorites box, select an item and click OK
to load the folder.
Select Favorites from the Browse for Folder box.

Favorites are a quick way to load exactly the data you want to see.
