Post Office Protocol is used by most email clients (applications) to retrieve email from a remote mail server over a TCP/IP connection. Some email clients use the newer IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol), which leaves mail on the server. The Client records email from applications using POP2, POP3, or IMAP.
