Chat or Chat Rooms are “rooms” representing different categories that multiple users enter and then post and exchange messages to discuss a topic. They are analogous to a real time interactive newsgroup. Multiple software vendors provide their own proprietary interface to Chat Rooms that are controlled and owned by the vendor.
Instant Messaging is a term used to describe the action of two people conversing with each other by computer in real time. An Instant Message (IM) conversation is initiated by using the IM interface provided by a particular vendor calling another person using his or her IM name. An IM name is analogous to a phone number and the IM conversation is analogous to a phone call.
