The Client Recorder will not work properly unless it is in communication with the both the Primary Server and Data Vault components. If network name resolution on a domain network is properly configured, the Client should be able to resolve the Server Components computer name(s) and locate the computer. If the computer on which the Client is installed is unable to resolve Server Component name(s) to an IP address, the Client will not function properly.
Because this communication is so important, SpectorSoft recommends using a static IP address for the server computer (or computers). That way, if naming services are disabled, the computers are connecting across a WAN, or the computers are in a Workgroup, the static IP address can be used instead of the computer name.

To set a static IP address on a server:
Open the Windows Network Connections
Properties.
Make sure you are doing this on the computer where the Data Vault and/or
Primary Server is installed. You
can right-click on the Network Connection icon in the Windows Taskbar
notification area or open the Control Panel and select Network
Connections. Right-click
your Local Area Connection (or current network) to select Properties.
Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
and then click Properties.
If the IP address is being obtained automatically, manually configure
the computer to use a specific IP address, Subnet Mask, and specific DNS
server addresses. Make appropriate adjustments to your network setup.
This requires Domain Administrator privileges on a domain network.
If you haven't yet installed Clients, run the Deployment Utility, looking for the Server Communication panel that appears during the Deployment wizard.
If you have already installed, select Configure Computers, select a computer or group, right-click and select Client Settings. Select Server Communication at the bottom of the left-hand list to see the Server Communication panel.
On the Server Communication panel, set the Primary Server and Data Vault Server computer name(s), check Use Static IP Address and enter the IP address you have configured for the Primary Server / Data Vault computer(s).
Click OK. The settings will be applied during installation or when the Client restarts.
The Client uses a TCP/IP network connection, which allows access across a local network, Intranet, WAN, or the Internet. All communication ports needed by Server Components are opened automatically during installation. The Client looks for the specified IP address and expects to use IP Port 16770 for the Primary Server and IP Port 16769 for the Data Vault.

Network name resolution fails when services are disabled, when a Windows Workgroup network does not have the network naming service configured properly, or when a Domain Name System (DNS) service is malfunctioning. For insurance, use a static IP address on the Server Components computer(s). |
