Installing from the Control Center

Manage Computers

After running the Deployment Utility to create a Client Install file, use the Manage Computers view to select the computer(s) to receive the installation. Before you can install the Client Recorder from the Control Center, make sure:

At installation, the Client Service must be able to contact the Primary Server to verify its product license. If the Primary Server cannot be contacted, or if all licenses assigned to your serial number have already been reserved or used, the Client will not be installed.

To install the Client from the Control Center:

  1. Select the Manage Computers view.

  2. Right-click on the computer or group where you want to install the Client.

  3. Select Install Spector Client. If no license has been reserved for the computer, a message informs you that a license is now reserved. Click OK.

  4. In the file selection box that appears, select the Client Install (.sds) file to use. The default file is spsetup_Settings.sds in the Spector CNE folder. Click Open. Files are copied and the Install Schedule box appears.

Note: If the computer is "Not Detected," an error message will appear and the installation will not take place.

  1. To install now, select Install Spector Immediately and click OK.

To install at a time when the user will not be interrupted, deselect Install Spector Immediately and click Set Install Schedule. On the Schedule panel, select Once, set a start time, a day to run on, click OK, and click OK to close the Install Schedule box.

Note: It is not likely that you will need the Advanced scheduling features unless you are installing on a Windows 98 Client where the installation cannot take place when the user is logged out. In this case, you may want to set times to retry the task and a time at which to stop trying.

  1. When the schedule is set, the Set Account Information box may appear.
If you have logged into the Control Center using an account that has Administrator privileges on the Client computer (such as Domain Administrator), then the Control Center automatically retrieves the password needed for remote install and uninstall of the Client. If the Control Center is unable to read the password from the Client registry, then you will be prompted for a password before you can install the Client.

Enter the account credentials that will provide Administrator level permissions to install the Client on the computer. Next to "Run as" enter the domain\username for the account, then enter and confirm the password. Click OK.

  2. A message confirms that the Spector Client has been scheduled to install on the computer. Click OK.

If you are installing "immediately," after several minutes right-click and select Refresh to see the change in the computer's status in the Manage Computers view.

The Control Center allows you to install or update Client settings on multiple Clients at the same time — even when the computers are turned off. The installation task will be performed when the user starts the computer. You cannot, however, cannot install the Client on 98/ME computers where the user is logged out.
