Note: When a Web site is blocked, the user may see a "Page Not Found" error. There may be a delay with a timeout error returned. |
Configure Computers
Configure Internet Blocking recordings in the Block Internet Access panel of the Deployment Utility wizard or in the right pane of the Client Settings window. If you select Internet Blocking in Client settings, you can check the status of this recording option, as well as change Blocking options and schedule.
Block Internet Access - Check this option to turn on blocking and activate settings below. Clear this option to allow all Internet access.
Block All Internet Access - Check this option to block all access to the Internet on the Client computer (no further settings are needed).
Block Selected Internet Access - Check this option to specify ports and/or web sites to block.
You can block specific types of Internet access: https, chat, or instant messenger access. For example, in a test lab or library, you might block most Chat/IM and email protocols, but allow access to web sites for research and allow the messaging interface used among employees.
For each of the options, check the box to block access; clear the box to allow access:
Web Sites via HTTP/HTTPS - Check to block all Internet access to normal and secure Internet sites via these protocols; this will include most Internet sites but not local network or ftp addresses.
SMTP/POP Email - Check to block standard email activity (MS Outlook, etc.) on the Client computer.
File Transfer via FTP - Check to block file transfers using File Transfer Protocol.
AOL and HTTP/HTTPS - Check to block America Online sites and normal and secure web sites that might not be covered by the first option.
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) - Check to block instant messaging using AIM.
ICQ - Check to block this older, full-version standard Chat protocol.
ICQ Lite - Check to block only this stripped down version of ICQ messaging.
MSN Messenger - Check to block instant messaging of this type.
Trillian - Check to block messaging of this type.
Windows Messenger - Check to block instant messaging of this type.
XMPP (Jabber) - Check to block instant messaging of this type.
Yahoo Messenger - Check to block instant messaging via Yahoo.
Other Chat/IM and HTTP/HTTPS - Check to block other Chat and Instant Messaging communication (and Internet locations where the interface might be located) that the Spector Client detects.
Kazaa - Check to block this form of peer-to-peer communication.
In this area of Internet Blocking, create a list of web sites to block or to specifically allow. You can block up to 1,000 web sites.
New - Click this button to add a web site to the access list.
A window pops up. Enter the host name and the domain name. Do NOT enter a specific page on the web site. For example, the domain www.badsite.com matches and blocks all pages on the web site, including http://www.badsite.com/badpage.html or http://www.badsite.com/badfolder/anotherbadpage.html. It would not match http://mail.badsite.com. If you enter badsite.com the Client would block or allow all pages on http://www.badsite.com as well as http://mail.badsite.com. Click OK to add the new domain to the list.
Delete - Select a web site in the access list and click Delete to remove it from the list.
Import - Click this button to import a list of web sites from a text file (see below).
Export - Click this button to export the current Web Site Access list to a text file (see below).
Block web sites in list - Select this option to BLOCK all the web sites in the Web Site Access list. The limit for the number of web sites you can block is 1000.
Allow access ONLY to web sites in list - Select this option to ALLOW access to only those web sites in the Web Site Access box.

Use of this setting may cause unintended consequences. For example: If you specify in the Client that the only site the computer's user can access is cnn.com, you might expect that the user of the computer would be able to browse anything on the http://www.cnn.com Web site. For the most part, this is true; however, http://www.cnn.com will load pages and information from other domains in order to provide all of its content. As a result, only part of http://www.cnn.com, or what is intended as the site content, will be available. |

Large lists of web sites cause potential performance issues. The limit for the number of domains to BLOCK or ALLOW is 1000 entries. |
You can import a list of web sites to block (or allow). The import file should be a plain text (.txt) file with one domain name on each line. For example:
# Commented lines can be used
# with this symbol to add info to the list
www.gamblingsite.com
pornographysite.com
badsite.com
To import a list:
Create the text file listing all domains to block or allow.
Open the Control Center, and use either the Deployment Utility or Client Settings to access the "Block Internet Access" panel.
At the block Internet Access panel, select Block Internet Access and Block Selected Internet Access.
You are then able to click the Import button.
Browse to the location of your text file of domains and click Open.
The list is loaded into the panel's Web Site Access list.
To export a list:
Finalize your list using the Block Internet Access panel in the Deployment Utility or Client Settings.
Click the Export button.
Navigate to a location to save the text file, name the file, and click Save. The list of all of Internet Sites to block or allow is written to the text file.
