Primary
Server
The Primary Server manages your serial number and Client licenses, and provides updates. Your serial number must be registered through the Primary Server before you can retrieve the Client licenses you purchased. Each Client must receive a license to be installed and begin recording. Normally, you register your serial number and receive an "unlock" code during installation. Once Spector CNE is "unlocked," you can begin reserving and assigning licenses to each Client.
|
|
If you have not yet registered your serial number, you can do so through the Primary Server Administration Window or at the SpectorSoft web site. See Serial Number Registration. |
|
|
The Primary Server is installed as a Windows service that appears as an icon in the system tray of the computer where it is installed. It requires few system resources and minimal network bandwidth.
The Primary Server must be able to communicate with all Clients on the network.
It's beneficial but not required for the Primary Server to be on a computer with Internet access.
The Primary Server component is installed at one location on the network. You use one Primary Server for one serial number.
The Primary Server does not need to be on the computer where the Control Center or Data Vault are installed, but it does need to be in communication with those components.
|
|
If the Primary Server is not running or accessible on the network, Spector CNE will not work. When a Client cannot communicate with the Primary Server to validate its license, the Client continues to record, but does not upload the recordings to the Data Vault. In addition, the Client cannot respond to communications from the Control Center for remote management. |
The Primary Server provides and manages the Client licenses.
When you "unlock" Spector CNE at product registration, the serial number is enabled for the number of Client licenses purchased.
Once the serial number is enabled, you can use the Control Center to build the Client install file and install the Client on a computer. One license is "reserved" for each Client Computer you begin to install on. The license reserved for the Client is provided in Setup Info for the Client Computer (select Manage Computers, right-click a computer, select Properties and Setup Info)
Once a license is reserved for a specific Client, the license cannot be moved or recovered for another Client installation. For more information, see Client Licensing.
You can view the serial number and the number of licenses purchased and reserved by double-clicking the Primary Server icon in the system tray.
Once the Client is installed on a network computer, it must make contact with the Primary Server and establish licensing before it can begin recording.
To establish licensing:
The Client Service attempts to contact the Primary Server once every minute in order to establish the initial communication and receive the Client software license.
When communication is established, the Primary Server verifies the computer name and license.
When the license is verified,
the installed Recorder Agent begins recording.
Recorded events are stored in files on the local Client computer.
After the initial communication and verification, the Client Service contacts the Primary Server once every four hours to verify the software license.
If communication with the Primary Server is lost (the service has been stopped or the computer is off-line):
The Client continues recording. Recorded events, however, will not be uploaded to the Data Vault until communication with the Primary Server resumes.
The Client will attempt to contact the Primary Server every hour to re-establish communications and to validate the software license.
A Client cannot be managed remotely by the Control Center when it does not communicate with the Primary Server. If the Primary Server is not running, no Clients can be managed.
In addition to licensing, the Primary Server provides:
Ability to retrieve software updates from SpectorSoft
Access to a log file of Primary Server licensing and update activity
Access to the Windows Firewall exception setting required for Primary Server communication
