Configure Computers
Prevent Client computers from accessing specific areas of the Internet using the Block Internet Access panel in the Deployment Utility or in Client Settings. (By default there is no Internet blocking.) Use this panel to block all Internet access or all communication at a standard port, such as FTP or ICQ chat, as well as specific web domains.
The top option turns on blocking, and allows you to specify which Internet ports and web sites to block.

Block Internet Access - Check this option to turn on blocking and activate settings below. Clear this option to allow all Internet access.
Block All Internet Access - Check this option to block ALL access to the Internet on the Client computer. This option blocks all Internet ports, web sites, email, and chat/IM communication (no further settings are needed). You can schedule the blocking for certain days and times of day. See When to Block.
Block Selected Internet Access - Check this option to specify (on this panel) specify types of Internet access to block. You can schedule the blocking for certain days and times of day. See When to Block.
You can block all Internet access of a particular type: secure https sites where shopping and banking occurs, AOL sites, types of email and types of Chat/IM. For example, in a test lab or library, you might block ALL Chat/IM protocols (AIM, ICQ, ICQ Lite, MSN Messenger, etc.), but allow access to web sites for research, and allow the Windows Messaging interface used among employees.

For each of the options, check the box to block access; clear the box to allow access:
Web Sites via HTTP/HTTPS - Check to block all Internet access to normal and secure Internet sites via the http and https protocols; this include most web sites, but not local network or ftp addresses. Clear this option to allow normal Internet access.
SMTP/POP Email - Check this option to block standard SMTP and POP email activity (MS Outlook, etc.) on the Client computer. Clear to allow SMTP/POP email activity.
File Transfer via FTP - Check to block file transfers using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Clear this option to allow FTP uploading and downloading.
AOL and HTTP/HTTPS - Check to block America Online sites, and normal and secure web sites that might not be covered by the first option. Clear to allow access.
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) - Check to block instant messaging using AIM. Clear to allow access.
ICQ - Check to block any chat communication using the full-version, standard ICQ Chat protocol, such as through older AOL clients. Clear to allow access.
ICQ Lite - Check to block any chat communication using the stripped down Lite version of ICQ messaging.
MSN Messenger - Check to block MSN instant messaging. Clear to allow access.
Trillian - Check to block instant messaging that uses the Trillian protocol to communicate on major chat networks. Clear to allow access.
Windows Messenger - Check to block instant messaging of this type. Clear to allow access.
XMPP (Jabber) - Check to block instant messaging that uses the XMPP or Jabber protocol. Clear to allow access.
Yahoo Messenger - Check to block instant messaging via Yahoo. Clear to allow access.
Other Chat/IM and HTTP/HTTPS - Check to block other Chat and Instant Messaging communication (and Internet locations where the interface might be located) that the Spector Client detects. Clear to allow access.
Kazaa - Check to block peer-to-peer communication via Kazaa, a file-sharing application commonly used to download MP3 and video files. Clear to allow access.
Kazaa Lite - Check to block the Lite version of Kazaa, a modification of the original using the same protocol. Clear to allow access.
In this area of Internet Blocking, create a list of web sites to block or to specifically allow. You can block up to 1,000 web sites.

When a Web site is blocked, the user may see a "Page Not Found" error. There may be a delay with a timeout error returned. |
New
- Click this button to add a web site to the access list.
A window pops up. Enter the host name and the domain name. Do NOT enter
a specific page on the web site. For example, the domain www.badsite.com
matches and blocks all pages on the web site, including http://www.badsite.com/badpage.html
or http://www.badsite.com/badfolder/anotherbadpage.html. It would not
match http://mail.badsite.com.
If you enter badsite.com the Client would block or allow all pages on
http://www.badsite.com as well as http://mail.badsite.com. Click OK to
add the new domain to the list.
Delete - Select a web site in the access list and click Delete to remove it from the list.
Import - Click this button to import a list of web sites from a text file. See Import/Export Domains to Block.
Export - Click this button to export the current Web Site Access list to a text file. See Import/Export Domains to Block.
Block web sites in list - Select this option to BLOCK all the web sites in the Web Site Access list. The limit for the number of web sites you can block is 1000.
Allow access ONLY to web sites in list - Select this option to ALLOW access to only those web sites in the Web Site Access box.
