Remote Viewing Across a Network

With a local network of two or more computers, you can review activity recorded on other computer(s) from a separate "Viewer" computer. A "network" can be any computers connected by cable or wireless that share a common printer or Internet access. If you don't have a workgroup or domain network set up, you may want spend some time setting up your "Network Places" (see below).

Home Example...

You are the parent of two teenagers, Jack and Jill. Each has a computer in his or her bedroom, and you have a computer in your home office. You plan to monitor both teenagers. Purchase two licenses and perform a Standard installation of Spector Pro on Jack's computer and on Jill's computer. Once each installation is complete, Spector Pro automatically begins recording. Follow the remainder of the network installation procedure outlined below, including a Viewer Only installation on the computer in your home office. Once the Viewer Only installation is complete, you can view recorded activity from your home office.

Business Example...

You manage a doctor's office with four computer stations: reception, nursing, and two clerical. You have a computer in your office and you are the Administrator of the network. At the doctor's request, you plan to monitor all employees. Purchase four licenses and perform a Standard installation of Spector Pro on each employee's computer. Once each installation is complete, Spector Pro automatically begins recording. Follow the remainder of the network installation procedure outlined below, including a View Only installation on the computer in your office. Once the Viewer Only installation is complete, you can view recorded activity from your office.

A SpectorSoft license is required for each recorded computer. If your product serial number is not enabled for the proper number of licenses, your software will cease to function. See Adding Licenses or contact SpectorSoft Sales toll free at 1-888-598-2788 to purchase additional licenses at a reduced price.

Required Steps

Remote viewing requires these steps:

  1. Install Spector Pro on each computer to be recorded.
Perform a Standard, licensed, Spector Pro installation on each computer to be recorded. You must purchase a license for EACH Standard installation.

  1. Share the Spector Pro Data Folder.
After installing Spector Pro, set up data file sharing. This will allow you to access the Spector Pro data files on the recorded computer from your remote, Viewer computer. Read "Preparing Computers to Share Data" below.

  2. Install the Viewer Only on your computer.
    Perform a
Viewer Only Spector Pro installation on the computer where you will review activity. You are NOT required to purchase an additional software license for the computer on which only the Viewer is installed. At this computer, use the Viewer to bookmark the hidden shares (optional) on each recorded computer for easy data loading. NOTE: Loading files over a network is always "slower" than viewing them directly on the monitored computer.

If you have the proper number of licenses, you can record the computer where you view data! Simply perform a Standard instead of a Viewer Only installation.  Given appropriate access to shared folders, the Viewer from any Spector Pro installation can "load" data from another computer.

Install Spector Pro ONLY on computers that you own.  The SpectorSoft software license agreement requires that you inform anyone you monitor with SpectorSoft products.

Setting up Your Network

If you do not have a domain network set up, you will probably view other computers in a workgroup. Use the Windows Start menu and select My Network Places to begin looking for other computers

If you have a domain network, you may want to consider Spector Corporate Network Edition (CNE), a robust network-based version of Spector Pro. CNE allows you to install and monitor SpectorSoft recording on any or all PCs in your network, from one central location.

Preparing Computers to Share Data

If you want to view data from a remote computer, at the recorded computer you need to share the folder containing the data. As you install Spector Pro on network computers, follow the instructions below.

Disable all anti-virus software prior to any installations. If you have third-party firewalls or other special security software installed, be prepared to make adjustments to allow sharing.

  1. Am I logged in as an Administrator? Explain...

Some computers are set up for different user accounts, and the accounts may have different permission settings. For example, a child's computer may be logged in and running under a limited permissions account. You need to be logged on to Windows as an Administrator user on this computer (or, in a domain network, as Domain Administrator) to install the Spector Pro software and change operating system settings.

If you do not know:
If necessary, use Ctrl+Alt+Del to get the current logon information, then click Cancel. Check the Windows User Accounts for this computer (Start > Control Panel > User Accounts) and make sure the current logon belongs to the Administrators group. If it does not, you'll need to obtain a user name and password and log on as an Administrator user for this computer.

  1. Which operating system does the computer use?
    If you do not know:

From the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties to open the System Properties window. The Windows operating system, version, and Service Pack information are listed under "System."

  2. If the computer uses XP Professional...
Follow instructions in Data File Sharing to allow access to the Spector Pro data.
If you have a Windows Workgroup, you may need to disable simple file sharing.
Begin using Spector Pro as soon as it is installed on all computers, data files have been shared, and you can "see" the shared folders from My Network Places on your Viewer computer.

  3. If the computer uses XP Home...
Make sure file sharing is enabled.
Make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled.
Set up Data File Sharing to allow access to the Spector Pro data.
If you have trouble, consult Windows Help to set up your network.
If you have a Windows Workgroup, you may need to disable simple file sharing.

Perform a Standard installation at each recorded computer.
