Spector 360 provides companies with the ability to analyze in complete detail what their employees are doing on the Internet through sophisticated reports and charts.

New Study Says Workers Admit Non-work Related Web Surfing is the #1 At-work Diversion
|
|
A new study released by Salary.com and AOL found that American workers admitted they spend, on average, 2.1 hours a day doing non-work related things and the single largest distraction is personal Internet surfing. The survey, which included responses from more than 10,000 workers, found that non-work related activities, such as surfing the web, are costing US companies more than $750 billion dollars a year in lost productivity alone. The report also found that younger workers tended to waste more time than older workers and that employers are significantly underestimating the time and money lost to non-work related activities. According to the research, the biggest time-wasting industries were: Insurance, Government, Research & Development, and Education.

Tech Tip: Installing Multiple Viewers Enables Managers To Monitor Their Own Staff
|

Spector CNE enables you to install multiple viewers within your organization, allowing managers to monitor their own departmental employees without having to install a Spector CNE Control Center. To install just the CNE Viewer follow these quick instructions:
- Ensure your managers have permission to access the C:\SpectorData folder of your Spector CNE Data Vault computer.
- Visit the managers computer and run the installation file used to install your Spector CNE Server components.
- Select Yes to agree to the licensing agreement, enter your Spector CNE serial number, uncheck All Spector CNE Components and check only Spector CNE Viewer and select continue to complete the installation.
- Select Windows Start, All Programs, Spector CNE and Spector CNE Viewer to open the Viewer.
- A Browse for Folder window will open allowing you to navigate to the SpectorData folder of your Spector CNE Data Vault computer or you can enter the UNC path such as \\<servername>\SpectorData$ if you are using a hidden share. Press Add to Favorites to allow easy future access to this and other users folders.
Spector Pro also has a built-in viewer for accessing a data folder across your network. To install just the Spector Pro Viewer follow these quick instructions:
- Visit your recording installation of Spector Pro, press your hotkeys and password, select Settings, Security and note your existing Data File Folder location.
- Use My Computer to locate the folder and create a share with permission for the viewers Windows login user name.
- Visit the computer you wish to view from and install using the same installation file used to install your recording installation, however choose Advanced on the Spector Installation Start menu and Viewer Only on the Advanced Options menu and press Next to complete the installation.
- Select Windows Start, All Programs, Spector Pro and Spector Pro Viewer to open the Viewer.
- A Browse for Folder window will open allowing you to navigate to the shared data folder of your Spector Pro computer or you can enter the UNC path such as \\<computername>\<sharename>. Press Add to Favorites to allow easy future access to this and other data folders.

Success Story: Housing Authority Saves More Than $60,000 after 1st Week with CNE

After just one week of running Spector CNE, the Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority of Juneau, Alaska discovered detailed and extensive abuse of computer and Internet activity by an employee about whom they had concern. This employee was surfing porn, playing games and spending almost no time doing work. The abuse was so extensive that there was no question that the appropriate action was to terminate the employee.

Secure Enterprise Highlights How CNE Helped Hospital with HIPAA & Productivity Monitoring

The May issue of Secure Enterprise magazine included an article about how one Spector CNE customer, who purchased CNE to deal with HIPAA compliance, found they could increase overall productivity, too. The HIPAA security rule requires health-care entities to deploy technical mechanisms for protecting Protected Health Information (PHI) in electronic form. According to the article, Lab reports and other PHI often are passed throughout hospital networks, particularly through e-mail, to a greater degree than people realize.
Mobridge Regional Hospital in Mobridge, South Dakota, which developed acceptable-use policies for the Internet and e-mail, turned to Spector CNE to make its policies enforceable. But within one week Mobridge administrators realized the software would have benefits FAR beyond enforcing acceptable-use policies and auditing for HIPAA compliance. Mobridge Regional was able to save hundreds of the labor hours employees were wasting on activities unrelated to their jobs. The article stated, After employees were told they could be monitored, non-work activity dropped to about zero. Mobridge reported it saved more than $180,000 a year in lost productivity.

CRN calls Spector CNE Powerful Ally

Calling Spector CNEs auditing capabilities, especially useful for companies attempting to adhere to the requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and other laws, Computer Reseller News (CRN) was impressed by its first look at the product. The review, which was conducted by CRN Test Center engineers, called it a powerful ally.
According to the review, CRN Test Center engineers were impressed with the breadth of information gathered by the tool, and the software's extensive configuration options. The agent can be set up to capture any event on a target PC, and Spector CNE also offers scheduling, Web site blocking and the ability to customize rules for each monitored PC. Another handy capability is the ease with which the agent can be pushed down to each client.
The review also noted, Spector CNE's integrated management console provides wizards and help screens for deploying the client application and monitoring workstations. A powerful reporting tool allows administrators to quickly access user history and pinpoint which actions were performed by specific users.
The writer, Frank Ohlhorst, added Although Spector CNE is marketed as a security tool, it has a variety of uses. For instance, help desks may find it a useful troubleshooting application. Help desk engineers can use the product to recreate the exact steps a user completed before encountering an error.
